1888 "Improved Order of Red Men" Engraved Print

1888 "Improved Order of Red Men" Engraved Print

Original steel-engraved print, titled "The Trail," issued by the Improved Order of Red Men in 1888. The colorful graphics feature numerous vignettes of Native American life, with various weapons, feathers, and tapestry used as the framework for the design. The name of the artist, "Watts," is printed in the lower right corner. Copyrighted in 1888 and published by T. C. Fielding of Boston, Massachusetts, as noted in print along the base. The Improved Order of Red Men is a fraternal order founded in 1834, and it still exists today. Interestingly, despite it's name, membership in the organization was exclusive only to white men at the time, and had no Native Americans among its membership. The print (20.5x26.75") has a pencil notation on both the base (including a price of $1,800) and reverse; otherwise it remains in Excellent to Mint condition and is perfect for display in home or office. Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
