1889 Intricately Engraved Pool Cue w/Sterling Silver Decoration
<p>Ornate 1889 presentation pool cue displaying an intricate sterling-silver design on the butt. This is one of the most attractive vintage pool cues we have ever handled. The inlaid design features floral patterns along most of the butt, with circular rings positioned below the butt cap and above the butt sleeve. The sterling-silver plaque on the butt reads "Championship 1889 Harmonie." The sterling-silver butt sleeve displays an engraved illustration of two gentlemen playing pool, along with the name of the recipient: "J. E. Heimerdinger." While we cannot state with certainty, we are reasonably confident that this pool cue was issued by the The Harmonie Club, a prestigious private social club in New York City that was founded in 1852. (The Harmonie Club is still in operation and is the second-oldest social club in New York City.) The club's central membership during the nineteenth century was German immigrants of Jewish ancestry. Research indicates that a "J. E. Heimerdinger" sat on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company at the turn of the century, and he had a son of the same name who was one of the company's New York officers. The butt displays wear commensurate with its age and former use (it seems safe to say that Mr. Heimerdinger was an avid pool player), including a large crack in the butt cap. The sterling-silver elements have been recently polished. The butt, which is entirely original, is accompanied by two separate shafts that are of modern construction, each with matching joint collars. The butt and shafts are housed together in a black leather carrying case. </p>
