1894 Baltimore Baseball Club Vintage Team Photograph Presented to Joe Stevens

The 1894 Baltimore Orioles was a star-studded National League team that won the pennant. Winning 24 out of their last 25 games. Baltimore finished with a regular season record of 88-39, a .695 percentage. Presented is a '94 vintage Baltimore Orioles team photograph that was printed in 1930 and presented to Joe Stevens, a member of the famous Harry M. Stevens family, noted baseball ballpark concessionaires. The Orioles' team photo pictures six future Hall of Famers: Wilbert Robinson, star catcher and later a manager of the Baltimore Orioles and the Brooklyn Robins, named after him; John McGraw, great third baseman and legendary New York Giants manager; Dan Brouthers, star slugging first baseman. Brouthers held the career MLB home run record from 1887-89; Hugh Jennings, shortstop on Orioles pennant winners from 1894-96, and hit .401 in '96. Later, he was a famous manager of the Detroit Tigers; Wee Willie Keeler, an outfielder who hit .341 lifetime. Willie's famous hitting advice was, "Keep your eye clear, and hit 'em where they ain't;" Joe Kelly, an outfielder who hit .317 lifetime. Dubbed "Handsome Joe Kelly," he carried a small mirror and a comb in his pocket during games so he could maintain his grooming. The Orioles during the 1890s were ahead of their time in baseball strategy as they employed bunts, hit and run plays, Baltimore chops, backing up bases, and throwing to cut off men. The photo measures approx. 7.5x9.4", matted and framed at approx. 12x14". Printed at the bottom of the photo is, "BALTIMORE BASE BALL CLUB/1894/PENNANT WINNERS/JANUARY 10 - 1918." On the bottom section of the matting is written, "TO JOE STEVENS FROM JOHN P NIXON? OCTOBER 15 - 1930." All of the aforesaid HOF players are in the photo and listed below it except for Dan Brouthers, who was not in the photo. In addition to the aforesaid Hall of Famers, the following individuals are pictured in the photo and listed beneath it: Clarkson, Esper, Carey, Clarke, Brodie, Reitz, Mahon, Hemming, Bowerman, Pond, Gleason (Kid Gleason was a Major League pitcher and second baseman who was the honest manager of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox), Hanlon, Hoffer. In addition, Robinson is listed as Robbie, and Keeler is listed as Kelllel [sic]. On the right side of the matting are some small spots and areas that appear lighter than the rest of the matted background to the photo. The photo itself is in excellent condition, and it depicts six Hall of Famers and other well-known players who carried the Baltimore Orioles strategies throughout baseball.
