1896 Cornell Football National Champions Cabinet Photos (31)

1896 Cornell Football National Champions Cabinet Photos (31)

Stunning cabinet card photos of the 1896 Cornell football team, some of the oldest such photos from the college gridiron realm. At the time, the Cornell football program was just 10 years old. Indeed, until 1894 the team had no regular coach. The 1896 season was pivotal in the evolution of Big Red as a football power, as under coach Joe Beacham they went 5-3 in the Northeast Independent Conference, finishing only behind Yale and Harvard, paving the way for Pop Warner to come in as coach the next season. The photos show the players facing front or sideways, most in their red letterman sweaters, and appear to be the complete team. Photos are inside 6 x 8 3/4" gray cardboard mounts with subtle detailing around the oval cutouts of the pictures. Players are unnamed save for "Capt. R. Ratcliff," who appears on a 2nd piece with a soft fuzzy front and a stand on the back, where his name and "1896 Football" is written in pencil. Remarkably, photos are NRMT while most of the mounts are VG. The Ratcliff piece is G-VG with some of the fuzz on the front having come loose. There's also a separate, unused G-VG photo cover plastered with Cornell symbols, crests, mascots, and stickers reading "The Cornell Navy, Ithaca, N.Y." and names like "A.S. Petty, Captain." An extremely significant slice of Big Red history.
