1896 Morgan Bulkeley Collection - First National League President
Rare collection of material relating to Morgan Bulkeley's 1896 campaign for vice president of the United States. While much of Bulkeley's professional career was spent in business (president of Aetna Insurance) and politics (Governor of Connecticut and United States Senator), he is best remembered by collectors today as the first president of the National League in 1876. The importance of that role, together with Bulkeley's many contributions to professional baseball during its early years, resulted in his election to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.1) 1896 Ribbon pin. The blue ribbon features an affixed portrait photo of Bulkeley, with the gilt lettering reading "For Vice-President" above and "Morgan Bulkeley/of/Connecticut" below. The ribbon (2.5x5.25") displays a few very light stains to the photo and is in Excellent condition overall.2) 1896 Campaign pin. The pin, decorated in a patriotic red-white-and blue flag design, features a portrait image of Bulkeley in the center, with his name lettered directly below. A "Whitehead & Hoag" label appears on the reverse, which bears an 1896 copyright date. 1.25" in diameter. Excellent condition. The pin is accompanied by a one-page typed-signed letter, dated June 13, 1916, from John J. Fisher, an executive of the Aetna Life Insurance Company's St. Louis branch. In his letter, written to a "Mr. W. L. Mooney" of Aetna's Connecticut office, he informs Mooney that this pin was discovered in a desk drawer and he is returning it to him to "dispose of in such manner as you, yourself, may deem advisable." (The Republican National Convention of 1896 was held in St. Louis.) 8.5x11". VG.3) Full ticket to the 1896 Republican National Convention. This "1st Session Guest's Ticket" is stamped "4th Day Only." The ticket (6.25x3") displays two staple holes, a pinhole, and a few light creases. Good condition overall.
