1896 Robert Fitzsimmons Letter - Finest Known Letter from the Blacksmith (PSA)
This letter is a winner on all counts. Three pages typewritten letter to a Mr. Beck, has the most incredible content AND the most gorgeous stationery. All three pages are like fine 19th century engravings entitled, "Bob Fitzsimmons...Champions Of All Champions." Dated October 30th, 1896, the content is incredible. Not only does it talk about fighting James J. Corbett but Tom Sharkey as well. As far as Corbett, the well deserved, cocky champion writes, "...to tell you the candid truth, I don’t think he wants to fight me at all." Most tellingly, he beat Corbett (the man who beat the great John L. Sullivan) with the famous "solar plexus" punch. Also, the newly crowned champ talks of about the Sharkey fight where Wyatt Earp of all people acted as the referee and Sharkey won on a foul (?) despite having to be carried out of the ring! Fitzsimmons states, "I am feeling good and strong and weigh more than ever. I am confident of defeating Sharkey and will try to do it in four rounds, which Corbett failed to do in his fight with him, and if it had lasted two more rounds, he would surely have been defeated." Beautifully signed "Your Sincere Friend Robert Fitzsimmons" to top it all off. Was originally in a museum collection and was later deacquisitioned. Comes certified by PSA.
