1897 Robert Fitzsimmons Desk Ornament
When the hard-slugging Brit from Cornwall, England sent Jim Corbett to the canvas in the fourteenth round of their March 17, 1897 bout, Fitzsimmons became Heavyweight Champ of the World. Decorative horseshoe was handcrafted by Fitzsimmons himself (a talented blacksmith) and presented to his close friends. Brass horseshoe with a horse's leg forming the stabilizing back leg. Engraving on face reads, "From Rob't Fitzsimmons to my friend…March 17th, 1897…Good Luck." Wear and age has made the text above light but certainly legible. An amazing and tremendously rare piece from the hands of greatness.
