Original team photo of the undefeated (and untied) 1898 Bates College football team with accompanying yearbook in which the studio shot was published. Emanates from the estate of the lone black player pictured in the top row. 19th century team photos inclusive of black players are notable, given the opposition of most colleges to include blacks in organized team sports. 10x13.5" team photograph is in Excellent condition, exhibiting superb contrast and clarity, the players wearing wonderful period padding and uniforms, with the pigskin held in the middle, bearing the year in white paint, "'98." Framed to 18x22". Lelands LOA.
