1900 Basketball Photograph in Original Wood Frame

1900 Basketball Photograph in Original Wood Frame

One of the earliest and finest examples of basketball photography we have offered. Awesome oversized photograph shows the unidentified six-member team that won the "E. Athletic Championship," as it reads on one of two banners behind these mostly serious-looking young men, arrayed around 10 trophies that look like glitzy beer steins and before an incongruously ornate curtain-draped background. Most wear a "C" or "AC" on their turtleneck sweaters or shirts and "Boston 1900" is emblazoned on both banners. This means the photo was taken only 9 years after Dr. James Naismith invented the game at Springfield College, the city where this amazing piece of arcanum was discovered. Later in the decade, it was being played by college and early pro squads. Among the latter was the Massachusetts Basketball League that played from 1900-02 and included the Pawtucket Athletic Club -- so perhaps this answers the "AC" riddle. 9 1/2 x 11 1/2" of the image are showing. It is in its original wood frame so we are not sure how large the photo extends beneath. We do have a theory that this is a mounted photo that is quite larger. It is matted with an original wood backed. There is a stain on the matte and the 22 x 25.5" frame with raised wood flowers yes a few nicks here and there., The photo however is NRMT with perfect contrast and the overall display is magnificent. A precious antique from b-ball's first decade.
