1902 Houdini Ogdens Guinea Gold Cigarette Card PSA 3 VG
Houdini (born Erik Weisz, 1874-1926) decided in 1899 to concentrate on fabulous escapes, and challenged all comers to produce handcuffs and other locking devices to test his abilities. While in London in 1904, he was presented with a set of "Mirror Handcuffs", specially designed and widely considered to be escape-proof. They were, at least until one hour and ten minutes later, when Houdini solved the problem, and was soon known and celebrated throughout the world as "The Handcuff King". If Magicians had rookie cards, this would be one of the great ones. Issued in England, the card is extremely rare, having been graded only six times by PSA, with only three cards earning a higher grade. This card presents an early image of the great Houdini in a classic pose with handcuffs, chains and shackles, and is captioned "Houdini, "The Handcuff King", with Ogdens advertising below. The card is graded PSA 3 - VG, and exhibits only minor edge and corner wear and a small wrinkle at the extreme left, which does not affect the central image. The earliest appearance of Houdini on a card, and an absolute must for any serious collector.
