Baseball Memorabilia

Lot # 1: 6/24/25 Shohei Ohtani 300th Career Home Run Baseball (Combined MLB & Japan Leagues) - Photo-Matched - Consigned by the Fan Who Caught the Ball! (Davious Photo-Matched & Detailed Provenance)

Displayed is the baseball that astounding two-way player Shohei Ohtani, now mounting a challenge to Babe Ruth as the best two-way player in the history of baseball, hit into the left field stands at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, on June 24, 2025, for the 300th home run of his professional career. "He [Ohtani] kind of reminds you of Nolan Ryan and then he reminds you of freaking Barry Bonds," said Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux on ESPN Radio's Canty and Carlton show. "He's both of these guys," continued Maddux. "I mean, he's got great stuff [,] and he can hit a home run with anybody. Nobody else has done it before...The last guy was who, maybe Babe Ruth? Nobody's been able to do that." Ruth was both the best power hitter of his era, and also a superb pitcher. His lifetime batting average is .340, with 714 home runs, and Ruth still holds the all-time Major League records for slugging (.690) and OPS (1.164). The Bambino also went 94-46, with a 2.28 ERA as a pitcher, all with the Boston Red Sox except for a few games with the New York Yankees. Also, Ruth once held the World Series record for pitching consecutive scoreless innings, at 29.2, later broken by Whitey Ford. But, except for a few instances or short stretches, Ruth was really a two-way player in the same season only in 1919. That year, he batted .322, with 29 home runs, to lead the American League and had a 9-5 record as a pitcher, with a 2.97 ERA.

Ohtani's 300th home run blast against the Colorado Rockies occurred in the top of the 6th inning against Rockies' pitcher Ryan Rolison. The Dodgers were at bat and led 6-3. Tommy Edman singled, and then with no outs and a 0-1 count, Ohtani hit this offered baseball deep into the left field stands. Ohtani's swing provided an exit velocity of 101.6 miles per hour, with a distance of the ball's travel at 373 feet. In the left field stands, attending her 833rd baseball game, was Emily Sauvageau, the consignor of this offered baseball. In the June 24th game this season, Ohtani, who throws right-handed and bats left-handed, used an inside-out swing to hit the ball to left field. Waiting just over the railing of the stands, Emily Sauvageau moved towards where she thought the ball would come down, flicked out her baseball glove or mitt, worn on her right hand, and made a remarkable, one-hand catch, cleanly catching the ball on the fly just as it just cleared the glove of the Rockies' left fielder Jordan Beck. The Dodgers hung on to win the game, 9-7. Following her catch, Emily was swarmed by fans, the media, and even YouTubers who wanted to interview her. We have uploaded images of all provenance connected to her at the game.

As for Ohtani, before coming to play in the Major Leagues, Shohei had played five seasons in the top Japanese league, called the Nippon Pro League. He was a two-way player for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, where he pitched, played the outfield and was a designated hitter. In Japan, Ohtani has a lifetime NPL pitching record of 42-15, with a 2.52 ERA and 624 strikeouts. His Japanese batting statistics include a career .284 batting average, with 48 home runs. Before playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Shohei played in the Major Leagues with the Los Angeles Angels from 2018 through 2023. He played 2024 and in the current season for the Los Angeles Dodgers, signing a then-record 10-year contract for 700 million. In Major Leagues, Ohtani, as of this writing in mid-July 2025, has a 38-19 pitching slate, with a 2.97 ERA and 618 strikeouts. As a Major League hitter, Ohtani at this writing has a career .281 batting average and 255 home runs. Ohtani was with the Los Angeles Angels. from 2018-23, and he has played with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2024 to the present. Returning after an arm injury, Ohtani (as of this writing at the All-Star Game break in mid-July 2025) is batting .286, with 30 home runs and 56 RBIs. At the same time, he has been slowly returning to pitching, as he served as an opener, pitching in five games, - totaling nine innings - with a 0-0 record and a 1.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts.

The offered Ohtani 300th home run baseball is an Official Major League Baseball (Manfred). It shows some wear, with a few minor spots or slight stains, and some somewhat darkened sections, yet is still in very good condition.  Ohtani, with his active return this season as a full-time two-way player, now performs under the baseball spotlight on an almost daily basis. With his nicknames of "Shotime" and "The Japanese Babe Ruth", Ohtani seems to be drawing closer to Ruth as the consensus baseball Greatest of All Time, the "Baseball G.O.A.T". The offered baseball makes a great remembrance of Shohei Ohtani, now the most important, and followed, player in baseball. Comes with Davious Photo-Matched LOA and a letter of authenticity from consignor Emily Sauvageau.

Baseball Autographs

Lot # 3: Extremely Scarce 1914 Cleveland Naps Team-Signed Baseball featuring Joe Jackson - Player Provenance (JSA)

Joe Jackson, in 2025, after over a century of banishment from baseball, has this year had his placement on baseball's ineligible list rescinded, and the great outfielder, nicknamed "Shoeless Joe," one of the eight banned 1919 Chicago Black Sox, is now eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Thus, the current offering of a 1914 Cleveland Naps team-signed baseball with the extremely scarce signature of Joe Jackson is particularly timely. Jackson was born in 1887 in Pickens County, South Carolina, and he grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. He started work at age 6 or 7 in a Greenville textile mill, and he never went to school. As a consequence of his lack of education and illiteracy, Jackson signed his name with an "X" on his first professional contract. As he continued his professional baseball career, he did learn to trace his name for many signatures. His wife was literate, and she read Jackson's mail for him, handled his finances, and read his contracts for him. Because of Jackson's illiteracy, his signatures are rare, even more so on a baseball. Jackson started his Major League career with brief appearances for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1908-09. He played with Cleveland from 1910-15 and with the Chicago White Sox from 1915-20. He batted a lifetime .356, behind only Ty Cobb for the highest Major League career batting average. Jackson had a career total of merely 54 home runs as he played his career in the Dead Ball era. Jackson's power showed in his 168 lifetime triples, leading the AL three times in three-baggers. Jackson batted .408 in 1911, his highest batting average, and he had a .940 career OPS. At the conclusion of the trial on August 19, 1921, of seven (infielder Fred McMullin was not tried) 1919 Chicago White Sox players and two gamblers accused of fixing the '19 World Series in favor of the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago jury acquitted the players and the two gamblers. The very next day, Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, a former Federal Judge, issued the following proclamation, banning eight "Black Sox" from "Organized Baseball" for life": "Regardless of the verdict of juries, no player who throws a ballgame, no player who undertakes or promises to throw a ballgame, no player who sits in conference with a bunch of crooked players and gamblers where the ways and means of throwing a game are discussed and does not promptly tell his club about it, will ever play professional baseball." Now banned, Joe Jackson went home to Greenville, South Carolina, and operated several businesses, including a liquor store. He also played semi-pro baseball under assumed names. Thus, Jackson's Major League career was truncated when he was still in his prime, and so his being out of the limelight is yet another reason that his signature is extremely rare.

The Cleveland Naps were nicknamed for their player-manager, Hall of Fame second baseman Napoleon "Nap" Lajoie. The team-signed ball has twenty-nine (29) autographs: Joe Jackson, Nap Lajoie, Ray Chapman, Bill Wambsganss, Joe Birmingham (ss), Guy Morton (twice), Bill Reidy, Willie Mitchell, Fred Carisch, Vean Gregg, Nemo Leibold, Nick Cullop, Walt Barbare, Roy Wood, Jack Graney, F.E. Van, Ivy Olson, Elmer Smith, Harley Dillinger, Abe Bowman, Doc Johnston, Frank Mills and a few others.

The team-signed ball was found at an estate sale in the 1980s in Cleveland, Ohio, and originated from Bill Reidy, who was a scout for the Naps after his playing career for the New York Giants, Brooklyn Superbas, and St. Louis Browns, from 1896 to 1904. At the estate sale, the ball was accompanied by a signed original photograph of Reidy, and that 8x10" photo is included in this lot. It's inscribed "To Ferd, from 'Slow Ball' Bill' [sic] Reidy, Scout Cleve BB Club Season - 1914." The offered ball is an Official American League Ball (Johnson) in very good condition, with a light coat of shellac. Some of the autographs have faded, and the signatures rate 6/10 overall. With the recent lifetime ban on Jackson lifted, and his subsequently being eligible for the Hall of Fame, interest in Joe Jackson will only increase, making his immensely rare signature all the more sought after.

The Jackie Jensen Collection

Lot # 5: 1958 Jackie Jensen American League MVP Award - Direct Family Provenance

1958 American League Most Valuable Player Award presented to Boston outfielder Jackie Jensen. Jensen enjoyed the finest overall season of his career in 1958, batting .286 with career-high totals in home runs (35), RBI (122), and slugging percentage (.535). His 122 RBI were also tops in the league that year. At the time, he joined Jimmie Foxx and Ted Williams as the only three Boston Red Sox players to have been named American League MVP (1931 which was the first year in which the award was officially presented). MVP Awards are seldom seen at auction and have always been highly prized by collectors. This is just the second example we have offered in the past thirteen years and one that would be among the highlights of any advanced baseball memorabilia or Boston Red Sox collection.

Major League MVP Awards are not only one of the most prestigious awards in all of sports, but among the most attractive as well. The design features an octagonal sterling-silver multilayered plaque, with gold accents, mounted upon a black wooden backing. The lettering, all in relief, reads "Kenesaw Mountain Landis Memorial Baseball Award" around the perimeter. Interior lettering, upon a representation of a baseball diamond, reads "Most Valuable Player American League Jackie Jensen Boston Red Sox," with Jensen's name engraved on a mounted gold plate. Additional gold accents consist of a raised image of a baseball dated "1958" and a raised portrait image of former Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Landis, with banners displaying, respectively, the years marking the start and end of his tenure: "1921" and "1944." (Landis died in office in 1944, at which time each League's MVP Award honored his memory by bearing his name.) The enameled logo of the Baseball Writers Association of America, whose members select each League's MVP, appears at the base. The name of the manufacturer, "Dieges & Clust" and "Sterling" are engraved in tiny letters at the base of the octagonal plaque. A Dieges & Clust label also appears on the reverse. Diameter: 16 inches. There is a small nick to the wooden base near the bottom edge; otherwise the award remains in Near Mint condition.

The Jackie Jensen Collection

This is one of fifteen lots in the auction originating from Jackie Jensen's personal collection. All have been consigned directly by a family member and have never before been offered for sale, either publicly or privately. Jackie Jensen was one of the greatest athletes of of his day and was an All-American standout on both the baseball diamond and gridiron at the University of California. While at Cal, he helped lead the baseball team to the championship of the first NCAA College Baseball World Series in 1947. The following year he became the first Cal player to rush for over 1,000 yards and helped lead the football team to a 10-0 record and a share of the Pac-Ten title. He also finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting at season's end. Jensen left college after his junior year to play professional baseball. He began his career with the New York Yankees, and was a member of both the 1950 and 1951 World Championship teams. Unfortunately, his playing time was limited with the Yankees and it wasn't until he was traded to the Washington Senators in 1952 that he began to develop into one of the game's top outfielders. His best years came with the Boston Red Sox from 1954-59, where he teamed with Ted Williams and Jimmy Piersall to form the best outfield trio of the decade. During that six-year span he was one of baseball's best all-around outfielders, leading the American League in RBI on three separate occasions. His finest season came in 1958, when he batted .286 with 35 home runs and a league-leading 122 RBI, numbers that earned him the American League MVP Award. Jensen retired after the 1961 season with 199 home runs, 929 RBI, and a .279 lifetime average.

William Weart 1911-1917 WS Press Pin Collection

Lot # 1505: 1911 Philadelphia Athletics World Series Press Pin - 1st World Series Press Pin!

Exceedingly rare World Series press pin issued by the Philadelphia Athletics for the 1911 fall classic against the New York Giants. This is the first World Series press pin ever issued and it represents the "holy grail" for advanced collectors wishing to acquire a complete run of World Series press pins. To put its rarity in proper perspective, it should be noted that this is the first example we have ever offered and we have seen only two others at auction in the past twenty-five years. To the best of our knowledge, there are probably fewer than six surviving examples. The offered pin is especially noteworthy because not only is it new to the hobby, but it also comes with exceptional provenance.

This pin originates from the personal collection of William "Billy" Weart, who was one of the most prominent sportswriters of the early 1900s and one of the founding members of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA). (This is one of four rare early World Series press pins from Weart's personal collection featured in this auction.) The pin has remained in the Weart family for the past 114 years and has never before been offered for sale, either publicly or privately. It has been consigned to this sale directly by a member of the Weart family.

In addition to its rarity, provenance, and historical significance, the offered pin is also one of the most attractive World Series press pins ever produced. The design features a decorative blue-enamel brooch at the top that is lettered "Press." Hanging from the brooch is a blue silk ribbon that reads "World Series Shibe Park Philadelphia 1911." Attached to the base of the ribbon is a circular, scalloped-edge medallion that features a representation of a "White Elephant" standing upon a pair of crossed bats and baseball. The baseball reads "American League" with "Athletics" lettered directly below. The gold lettering around the blue-enamel perimeter reads "American Base Ball Club of Philadelphia." Produced by Alan A. Kerr as noted by the engraving on the reverse of the medallion. Aside from some minor surface wear and light tarnishing to the medallion portion, the pin remains in exceptional Excellent to Mint condition. The full pin measures 1.75x4 inches. The diameter of the medallion measures 1.25 inches.

The William Weart World Series Press Pin Collection

As we mentioned in our lot description, this is one of four early World Series press pins originating from the personal collection of William "Billy" Weart. Weart began his journalism career in 1891 and in 1896 he joined the staff of the Philadelphia Evening Telegraph. From 1913 to 1917 he served as the newspaper's baseball editor. Additionally, he was the longtime Philadelphia correspondent for both The Sporting News (1909-1917) and Sporting Life (1896-1916). In 1908 he was instrumental in helping found the BBWAA and from 1908 through 1918 he served as the organization's secretary and treasurer. One of the main reasons the BBWAA was formed was because of the lack of respect afforded reporters during the World Series.

At the time, it was general practice for club executives to offer the press box as seating for VIPs and friends, leaving the reporters little room to work. Giants manager John McGraw was especially egregious in this practice, often filling the press box with his many friends in show business. The BBWAA was successful in ending this practice and they did so by making entry to the press box contingent upon presenting a pass, which was in the form of a press pin worn on the lapel. The first press pin was issued by the Philadelphia Athletics in 1911 and the following year it became standard practice for each participating World Series club.

While the formation of the BBWAA was one of Weart's greatest accomplishments, it was not his only one. As an official scorer, he was instrumental in changing the rule that credited batters with a hit on a fielder's choice. He is also credited with popularizing the A's nickname of "White Elephants," after John McGraw disparagingly referred to the club by that term in 1902. Weart died in 1918 at the age of forty-six and he was so beloved by the sports community that the Philadelphia A's and Phillies played a benefit game in his honor on July 18, 1918, with all the proceeds donated to his wife and family.

Baseball Autographs

Lot # 4: 1939 Hall of Fame Induction Program Signed by All 11 Living Inductees & Many Others (PSA)

Extraordinary, and possibly unique, 1939 inaugural Baseball Hall of Fame induction program signed by ALL ELEVEN living inductees present that day, plus several other prominent guests. The eleven inductee signatures are those of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb (who has signed the program twice), Walter Johnson, Honus Wagner, Cy Young, Tris Speaker, Grover Alexander, Nap Lajoie, George Sisler, Eddie Collins, and Connie Mack.

This is the ONLY 1939 Hall of Fame induction program we have ever seen featuring the signatures of all eleven living inductees, making it one of the rarest and most significant signed pieces dating from that historic day. Its rarity notwithstanding, this program is especially noteworthy due to its remarkable provenance and the fact that each inductee has signed the program atop his respective photo. Ten of the eleven inductee signatures appear on page thirteen, while the signature of Connie Mack appears on the facing page twelve. Each signature has been beautifully scripted in blue fountain or black fountain pen and grades 9/10 on average. The remaining twelve signatures featured in the program are those of Mel Ott, Lefty Grove, Arky Vaughan, Hooks Wiltse, Johnny Vander Meer, Lloyd Waner, Ford Frick, Bill Jurges, Bob Quinn, Eddie Brannick, Morrie Arnovich, and one other (illegible). All but three of the signatures appear on pages twelve and thirteen, which makes the piece perfect for display if one wishes to have it framed. It must be noted that Ty Cobb has signed the piece twice; once upon his image and again directly above. The reason Cobb signed the piece is directly related to its provenance.

Our consignor's parents, who were engaged at the time, attended the dedication of the Baseball Hall of Fame on June 12, 1939, and this program has remained a family heirloom since that day. According to our consignor, his mother and father each purchased a program and set out to obtain the signatures of the players and luminaries they met. Although most of the players were accessible to the fans, only his mother was able to obtain the signatures of all eleven living inductees. Cobb was the toughest to obtain, because he arrived late to the ceremony. In our consignor's own words:

Mymother and her fiancé wanted to collect all the autographs of the living HOFplayers while at the opening of the HOF. She got autographsfrom all except for Ty Cobb who was late. In fact, he missed thefamous photograph with all the other inductees. My mother waited forTy Cobb then asked for his autograph. He said yes, but only if shegave him a kiss. (She was a 26-year-old brunette.) Shegave him a kiss on the cheek, but as she pulled away, he kissedher. When signing he said ‘well, since I got two kisses, I’ll signit twice.’ Thus, the ‘Double Ty’ signature.

We have seen very few items signed by all eleven living 1939 Hall of Fame inductees, and of those few, most of have been baseballs. The most recent example sold by Lelands appeared as Lot 1 in our 2019 Spring Classic auction, where it realized a final sales price of $236,389. As we noted earlier, we have never seen a 1939 Hall of Fame induction program signed by all eleven. However, a near-complete program, signed by ten of the eleven living inductees, commanded a price of $113,525 at auction in 2016 (the signatures were scattered throughout the program, not all together as on the offered program). This is simply the finest 1939 Hall of Fame signed induction program in the hobby and one that would be the cornerstone of any advanced Hall of Fame autograph collection. As further provenance for the piece, our consignor has also consigned to this auction (as a separate lot) the ticket stub, souvenir ashtray, and first-day cover obtained by his parents on that day.

The program (8.5x11") is well worn. The covers are detached and appear to have been split in two along the spine. Vintage brown tape has been applied to the spine and on both the exterior and interior portions of both covers in repair/reinforcement to the tears. The interior pages remain firmly bound by the original staples, but display a moderate vertical fold, as well as small edge tears to several pages. The program is partially scored in pencil for the first three innings of the inaugural Hall of Fame game, which was between two teams of Major League all-stars managed, respectively, by Honus Wagner and Eddie Collins. Full LOA from PSA.

Baseball Autographs

Lot # 909: Outstanding Babe Ruth Single-Signed Baseball (PSA)

Wilson official Pacific Coast League (Rowland) baseball signed by Babe Ruth across the sweet spot. Ruth's signature has been scripted in black fountain pen and grades 7/10 overall. The ball displays a tiny blemish on the league president panel and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Clarence "Pants" Rowland was president of the Pacific Coast League from 1944 to 1954, therefore this ball was signed by Ruth during the last four years of his life (Ruth died in 1948). This ball has been in our consignor's family since the day it was signed and has rarely seen the light of day over the past many decades. While the exact details of its history have been lost over time, a family member was associated with the Ford Motor Company and, based upon that information, it was probably obtained around 1947, when Ruth was working with Ford in its promotion of junior American Legion Baseball. This is an exceptional Ruth single in all respects and one that would be the centerpiece of any advanced Babe Ruth or single-signed baseball. Full LOA from PSA.

Ruth and Gehrig

Lot # 1513: Babe Ruth's Personal Set of Golf Clubs - Gifted to Johnny Mize

Set of 1930s era left-handed golf clubs owned and used by Babe Ruth and then later presented to Johnny Mize, who was related to Ruth through Ruth's wife, Claire. These clubs have an amazing provenance and are accompanied by a one-page, notarized letter signed by Johnny Mize's second wife, Marjorie Mize. In her letter, she relates that Johnny Mize had always talked about a set of golf clubs that Ruth had given him many years earlier, but he could never remember where he stored them. In 1995, two years after Johnny Mize died, this set of clubs was discovered in Mize's barn by his two sons. Since this was the only set of vintage clubs found among Mize's possession, his wife concludes by writing that "to the best of my knowledge these are the clubs that he [Johnny Mize] referred to when speaking about receiving a personal set [of] Babe Ruth's golf clubs." It should also be noted that Mize, like Ruth, was left handed, so it was only natural for Ruth to pass on the clubs to a fellow southpaw.

Lelands is very familiar with this set of clubs because they were first offered at auction by Lelands in its two-day "Major League" live auction held in New York City on November 17th and 18th in 1995. The clubs were consigned directly by Marjorie Mize at the time and purchased by our consignor at that sale. They have remained in our consignor's sole possession until now and in that respect are basically new to the hobby.

The late 1930s "Vic Ghezzi Grand Slam" model clubs, which were manufactured by H&B, consist of three woods, seven irons, a putter, and a "Gopher" putter. It should be noted that in the 1930s, the standard length of a driver was 43 inches, but two of the drivers in this set measure 45 inches and the other 44 inches. Ruth, who was an avid golfer, was known to use a longer 45" driver during his days on the links, so the extra length is what one would expect to find in Ruth's bag. The clubs are housed in a vintage leather Wright & Ditson golf bag. LOA from Marjorie Mize. Please note: the size and/or weight of this lotwill necessitate an increased shipping charge.

Horse Racing

Lot # 1839: 1985 Angel Cordero Jr. Kentucky Derby Jockey Trophy - Spend a Buck (Cordero Jr. LOA)

Presented is the 1985 Kentucky Derby Jockey Trophy that was won by Angel Cordero Jr. aboard Spend a Buck. This was the 111th edition of the Derby, run on May 4th before 108,573 spectators. Cordero is the first Puerto Rican to have won all three Triple Crown races, although he did not win them all in the same year. Cordero is also the first jockey from Puerto Rico to be inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. The '85 Derby was the third time Cordero had won at Churchill Downs: He won the Derby in 1974, aboard Cannonade and in 1976, riding Bold Forbes. At 42 years and six months, Cordero became the oldest jockey to have won the Kentucky Derby when he won in '85. Cordero also won the Preakness Stakes in '80 aboard Codex, and the Preakness again in '84 aboard Gate Dancer.  Cordero, known for his rough tactics and controversial fouls, rode every race as if it were his last. Cordero won the third Triple Crown jewel, the Belmont Stakes, in 1984, aboard Bold Forbes. Cordero was the leading rider at Saratoga Race Course for 13 seasons. He was the United States Jockey Champion in earnings in 1976, '82, and '83, and the U.S. Champion in wins in 1968. He also was awarded the prestigious Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 1982, '83, and '85. He has 7,057 career wins.

With Cordero riding, Spend a Buck won the '85 Derby with a time of 2:00 1/5, then the fourth fastest time in history. With fast track conditions, Spend a Buck broke quickly from the gate and his expected competition, Eternal Prince, got off to a poor start and never recovered. Spend a Buck's fractions were: 0:23; 45 4/5; 1:09 3/5; 1:34 4/5. Spend a Buck finished 5-1/4 lengths ahead of the second-place finisher, Stephan's Odyssey, ridden by Laffit Pincay Jr. In third place was Chief's Crow, with Don MacBeth aboard. After the Derby, in search of a large bonus, owner Cam Gambolati chose to have Spend a Buck forego both the Preakness and Belmont and instead race at Garden State Racetrack.

The offered silver trophy stands 6.2" tall. The base is 2.75" in diameter, and at the top the diameter is 3.25". The trophy is ornately crafted, and it has a raised image of a horseshoe. Engraved on the cup of the trophy: "KENTUCKY DERBY JOCKEY CLUB/May 4, 1985/CHURCHILL DOWNS/WON BY ANGEL CORDERO JR." Engraved on the underside of the base: "STERLING LEMON & SON LOUISVILLE, KY." The trophy has a very small dent of about a quarter inch diameter at about an inch from the top, some very light scratches, and some light tarnishing. Despite some very minor imperfections, this jockey trophy is a terrific thoroughbred racing remembrance, as it is for Angel Cordero Jr., one of the greatest jockeys of all time, for his victory in the most illustrious race of all - the magnificent Kentucky Derby.

Horse Racing

Lot # 1838: 1978-2020 Angel Cordero Jr. Personally Owned & Signed "Magic Saddle" Used to Win Eight Triple Crown Races (Cordero Jr. LOA)

Presented is the incredible opportunity to personally possess the most famous saddle in the history of horse racing! Yes, we offer the chance to own Angel Cordero Jr.'s famous "Magic Saddle," an innovative saddle created by Cordero's revolutionary idea, a saddle that was used by Cordero when he won the Kentucky Derby in 1985 on Spend a Buck, and used by Cordero, John Velazquez, Manny Franco and other jockeys to win eight Triple Crown races: the Kentucky Derby three times, the Preakness two times, the Belmont three times, plus, the Travers four times, and by the winner in 15 Breeders' Cup races.

Angel Cordero Jr. is a retired jockey and horse trainer, still active in racing as a jockey agent, born on Nov. 8, 1942, in Puerto Rico. As a jockey, he had six winners in Triple Crown races. He won the Kentucky Derby three times: 1974, riding Cannonade; 1976, aboard Bold Forbes; 1985, on Spend A Buck. Cordero also won the Preakness Stakes two times: 1974, on Codex; 1984, riding Gate Dancer. Cordero won the Belmont Stakes on one occasion: aboard Bold Forbes. Cordero also won four Breeders' Cup races. He was the first Puerto Rican jockey to win each of the Triple Crown races, although Cordero did not win the races in a single year. He is also the first Puerto Rican jockey in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. He was the U.S. Jockey Champion in Earnings in 1976, '82, and '83, and the U. S. Champion in wins in 1968. He won the prestigious Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 1982, '83, and '85. But Cordero was far from an overnight success. He learned to ride in the tough environment of Puerto Rican racing, where fouls were frequent and rarely called. When he arrived in New York in 1962, the only mounts available for Cordero were on longshots, but he began to win with some of those longshots. He soon became immensely popular with bettors, and he began to be noticed by horse owners, who gave him better mounts. On the U.S. mainland, Cordero employed the same roughneck racing tactics that were regularly employed in Puerto Rico. Other jockeys complained that he was cutting them off and committing fouls, and as a result, Cordero was in a number of fist fights with other jockeys. While his rough riding tactics were not always popular with fellow jockeys, Cordero was a bettors' favorite, one of the most popular jockeys in history, as fans felt that even with a longshot, with Cordero aboard that they had a chance to win. The Hall of Famer finished his career with 7,054 career wins.

What is the story behind Angel Cordero Jr.'s Magic Saddle? The saddle comes from Angel Cordero Jr., himself. Enclosed is a copy of an Angel Cordero Jr. LOA, which reads, in part, "In 1978, I decided to have this special saddle made because when I had to add weight... where I carried more than 124 pounds, the weights rubbed against my ankles[,] causing me problems. This new saddle... was manufactured with special pockets to add lead weights so that it could weigh as much as 18 pounds total.... I had no idea that this would one day become the most famous saddle in horse racing history.... I used this saddle in winning the 1978 Stuyvesant Handicap on Seattle Slew in what was the last race of his career. I won the 1985 Kentucky Derby on Spend a Buck with this saddle.... When I retired from racing, I became John Velazquez's agent and lent him the saddle.... Johnny used this saddle when he won the Kentucky Derby in 2011 on Animal Kingdom and on Always Dreaming when he won the Derby in 2017.... He also won the 2012 Belmont with this saddle upon Union Rags.... I also became the jockey agent for Manny Franco.... I lent Manny use of the saddle, too. Manny won the 2020 Belmont... using this saddle while riding Tiz The Law.... I'm conservatively estimating that my saddle won well over 100 Grade 1 races."

The offered English, leather saddle weighs nine (9) pounds. It is brown, and shows terrific wear, with the surface color often worn away to reveal more of a cream color underneath. There are also small stains and abrasions from years of use. The saddle has a length of approx. 17" from the pommel to the cantle. The base of the metal stirrups is approx. 1.5x4". Since it is a racing saddle, the horn is unpronounced. Each side of the saddle has two leather "pockets" measuring about 4.74x4.75". These are the pockets where the added weights were placed. These added weights are not included. Cordero signed and inscribed the seat of the saddle, using a fine tip black marker, scripting a clearly written: "My Magic Saddle/Angel Cordero." This vintage "Magic Saddle" makes a tremendous addition to any sports collection.

Lot # 1840: 2012 Wise Dan Eclipse Award - "Horse of the Year"

2012 "Horse of the Year" Eclipse Award presented to the owner of Wise Dan. An Eclipse Award is the most prestigious award in the field of horse racing, with twelve different Eclipse Awards presented annually in five different categories to both males and fillies, plus a single award for Steeplechase excellence. The other single-category Eclipse Award is for "Horse of the Year," which is tantamount to the MVP Award in other sports.

The offered 2012 "Horse of the Year" Eclipse Award has been consigned directly by the owner of Wise Dan and has never before been offered for sale, either publicly or privately. The design, which is a work of art as much as a trophy, features a bronze figural horse mounted atop a wooden base. The engraving on the plaque reads "Eclipse Award/2012/Horse Of The Year/Wise Dan/Ch. g. 5 by Wiseman's Ferry - Lisa Danielle/Owned by/Morton Fink." The award, which measures 10.5 inches in height, displays a few minor scratches and blemishes on the plaque, and light tarnishing to figural horse. Base: 7x4.25". Accompanied by a one-page signed letter of provenance from Wise Dan's owner.

Wise Dan was one of the greatest race horses in history and is the first horse to win three identical Eclipse Awards in consecutive years: 2012 and 2013 "Horse of the Year," 2012 and 2013 "Champion Older Male" and 2012 and 2013 "Champion Male Turf Horse." In a career that spanned the years 2010 and 2014, Wise Dan won nineteen graded stakes races, including the Breeders' Cup Mile (2012 and 2013), the Woodbine Mile (2012 and 2013), and the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (2012 and 2014). Following his retirement, Wise Dan was inducted into both the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame (2016) and the United States Horse Racing Hall of Fame (2020).

Lot # 1842: August 30,1919 Man O' War "Rookie" Year Hopeful Stakes Victory Ticket Stub - Earliest Graded Man O' War Ticket! PSA GD 2 (MK) (Only Graded Example)

A 1919 ticket from the Saratoga Cup and the Hopeful Stakes, which featured famed horse Man O' War, then in his rookie season. Exterminator, the winner of the 1918 Kentucky Derby, would win the Saratoga Cup and the soon to be iconic Man O' War would win the Hopeful Stakes before later winning the 1920 Preakness and Belmont Stakes. This is the oldest known example of a Man O' War ticket and the only ticket from his rookie season. The ticket has been authenticated, encapsulated and graded by PSA who has assigned a grade of 2 (MK). An iconic horse, Man O' War would win 20 out of his 21 starts and may have won the 1920 Triple Crown, but his owner, Samuel Riddle, did not want him racing at that distance. This winning ticket is a rare and impressive piece of horse racing history.

Lot # 1843: Secretariat Horseshoe Originally from Penny Chenery (ex-1999 Sotheby's Secretariat Auction)

A horseshoe worn by the legendary Secretariat. The shoe was originally offered for auction by Sotheby's/Amazon on behalf of Penny Chenery, the breeder for Secretariat. The silver shoe has been enclosed in lucite and includes a letter of provenance from Neil Bergelt, whose brother had originally purchased the piece at auction. The shoe was one of the two "Big Red" shoes consigned by Chenery for the auction. Big Red was the nickname given to the famed horse due to the color of his coat. Secretariat is widely considered to be one of the greatest racehorses ever. Foaled in 1970, Secretariat became the 9th horse to win the Triple Crown, doing so in 1973. The horse captured America's imagination and his name is now synonymous with racing success. Memorabilia from Secretariat's career is highly collectible, and sought after by collectors. This is an incredible piece from Secretariat's racing career and would be an ideal addition to any collection.

Lot # 6: 1951 Bowman Baseball #305 Willie Mays Rookie PSA NM 7

1951 Bowman Baseball #305 Willie Mays Rookie card. Graded NM 7 by PSA. This is an outstanding high-grade example of one of the hobby's most important post-war baseball issues. It should be noted that of the 2,164 examples of this card graded by PSA, only 122 have been graded NM7, with just 88 graded higher (no PSA Gem MINT 10 grades have ever been obtained for this card). This card originates from the mid-to-high-grade 1951 Bowman Baseball near-complete set being offered in this auction. That set was compiled by our consignor's father during his childhood and it has remained in the family, nearly untouched, since that time. A fabulous Mays rookie offering and one that would be a welcome addition to any advanced 1951 Bowman or Hall of Fame rookie-card collection.

Lot # 434: 1948 Bowman Basketball #69 George Mikan Rookie Card PSA EX-MT 6

One of the cornerstone cards in basketball collecting, this is freshly slabbed and simply superb. Always scarce in any kind of condition, a PSA 6 has not traded publicly in years. Freshly slabbed, this has the eye appeal and feel of a much higher grade card. All four corners are fairly sharp and intact, the edges are smooth and the surface is clean with the image of Mikan bold and the background remaining extremely blue. This card is a special card that is almost a stunner when held in hand. The winning bidder should really enjoy this remarkably fine and nice (and very conservatively graded) George Mikan Rookie Card.

Lot # 10: 2023 Topps Chrome Basketball '03 Time Machine Red Autographs LeBron James #5/5 PSA GEM MINT 10 Auto 10

This lot features a 2023 Topps Chrome LeBron James '03 Time Machine Autograph Red Refractor #5/5. This card has been graded and encapsulated by PSA GEM MINT 10. The autograph has been authenticated and graded by PSA AUTO GEM MINT 10. All 4 corners are sharp and intact while the centering remains virtually perfect. All of the edges are smooth and the surface is clean.

This card has been signed by LeBron ON card as opposed to a sticker. The rarity of this card is immense due to a couple of factors: 1) LeBron has had an extremely limited amount of autograph cards in recent years; and 2) This card is 1 of only 5 copies that have been produced by Topps. This card is an ode to his 2003-04 Topps #221 Rookie card in which he wore a similar white suit. In this card, LeBron is holding a piece of paper reading "40,000 - March 2, 2024" which is when he became the first player to score 40,000 regular season points in a career. This is a a truly historical card and perfectly captures how influential and prominent of a basketball player LeBron is. This card was featured on PSA’s Instagram on July 2 as part of a recent highlight of cards they’ve graded.

Lot # 1658: Circa 1960-63 Jack Twyman Cincinnati Royals Game Worn Jersey (MEARS A10)

Presented is a circa 1960-63 Jack Twyman Cincinnati Royals game worn jersey. Twyman, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, played 11 NBA seasons, all for the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals (now the Sacramento Kings): Rochester (1955-56 through 1956-57), Cincinnati (1957-58 through 1965-66). A 6'6" small forward, Twyman scored 15,840 points, for a lifetime 19.2 PPG. He was a 6-time All-Star. In 1959, Twyman became the first NBA player other than Wilt Chamberlain to average 30 points or more during a season. Later, he and Oscar Robertson, on the Cincinnati Royals, became the first NBA teammates to each average over 30 points a game. When Royals teammate Maurice Stokes, also a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer, suffered a serious head injury in the last game of the 1957-58 season, and became paralyzed, Twyman became Stokes' legal guardian. Twyman would sit next to Stokes and point to letters on a chart and Stokes would blink at the letter he wanted to communicate. Twyman raised money for Stokes' medical care by organizing an annual Maurice Stokes Basketball Game. Twyman's great devotion to Stokes resulted in the annual the NBA's annual Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award being instituted to honor both Stokes and Twyman.

The sleeveless, pullover, Dureen jersey is white, with blue and red trim. The Wilson jersey has a 20" chest measurement and a 30" torso measurement. Across the chest is "ROYALS" in sewn-on blue letters (in double tackle twill) with red trim. The offering comes with a MEARS Letter of Opinion that gives the jersey a "FINAL GRADE: A10."

Lot # 1308: 1937-40 Highest Graded Joe "Ducky" Medwick Game Used Bat (PSA GU 10)

Joe "Ducky" Medwick was a Hall of Fame left fielder who spent the majority of his Major League career with the St. Louis Cardinals. Presented is in our estimation, the finest Ducky Medwick game used bat on the planet, a 1937-40 Pre-Model Hillerich & Bradsby hickory bat. Medwick was born and raised in Carteret, New Jersey. He played in the Major Leagues for 17 seasons: St. Louis Cardinals (1932-40 & 1947-48), Brooklyn Dodgers (1940-43), New York Giants (1943-45), Boston Braves (1945), Brooklyn Dodgers (1946). He batted a career .324 with 205 home runs. He was the last NL player to win the Triple Crown (1937), and he won the NL MVP that season. He was given his "Ducky" nickname in the early 1930s while playing in the minor leagues with Buffalo. Some teammates thought he walked like a duck, and they called him "Ducky Wucky" or just "Ducky." Medwick despised the Ducky Wucky nickname, and he plainly disliked the Ducky nickname, so he promoted an alternative nickname, "Muscles," with middling success. Medwick was a key part of the 1934 St. Louis Cardinals World Champions and Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis took Medwick out of the final game of the 1934 World Series when the home team fans of the Detroit Tigers kept throwing fruit and soda bottles at him because of a dispute with a Tigers player.

The offered game used bat is 36.0" in length and it weighs 35.0 ounces. The bat comes with a PSA/DNA Letter of Grading and Athenticity. The bat label reads, "Louisville Slugger/125/HILLERICH & BRADSBY LOUISVILLE, KY." Above the label is etched "Powerized." The barrel has an etched, facsimile Ducky Medwick signature. The bat is uncracked, and it exhibits evidence of outstanding use. Many ball marks are visible on the left and back barrel. Cleat marks can be seen on the right, left and back barrel. Also visible on the bat are green bat rack streaks. The bat comes with a PSA/DNA Certification: 1B225345; Bat Grade PSA "GU 10" (a Perfect 10). The bat has a PSA sticker, also with a Certification Number: 1B25345.

On the short list of elite pure hitters in MLB history, Gwynn played all of his 20 seasons in San Diego, highlighted by the period covered by this very bat; from '94-97 he captured four straight NL batting titles (half of his NL record of 8, tied with Honus Wagner) while batting an amazing .371 combined over that span. In 1994, "Mr. Padre" made a serious run at the legendary .400 mark, falling just short at .394. Lot # 1294: 1959-60 Yogi Berra New York Yankees Game Used Catcher's Glove - Gifted to Former Major Leaguer (PSA)

"It ain't over 'til it's over," is a famous Yogi Berra saying, but as far as rapt interest in Yogi Berra memorabilia, it will never be over. Displayed is a great find for any sports fan: A game used Yogi Berra catcher's mitt that is hobby fresh. The 5'8" Hall of Famer was renowned for not looking like a ballplayer; but Yogi could surely play like one - a great one. Berra played 19 MLB seasons: 1946-63 with the New York Yankees, and a brief time as a player-coach with the 1965 New York Mets. He was an 18-time All-Star, a 10-time World Champion, and 3-time AL MVP. He batted a career .285 with 358 home runs. And Berra could also play defense. Who called and caught Don Lasen's perfect game in the '56 World Series? Yogi, of course.

The glove was gifted to a former Major League star of the 1940s and '50s, and consigned by a family member, but the family wishes to remain anonymous. The leather glove is a Spalding Model Number 1457. It is a size 33.0", and it displays evidence of heavy game use. The palm of the glove has alligatored from drying perspiration. There are various places with surface leather loss and various scrapes and surface wear. Berra's number "8" is visible, but fading, on the top of the pinky and ring finger sleeves. A facsimile "Larry 'Yogi' Berra" signature is branded on the lower, palm part of the front of the glove. Lightly branded on the mitt is "Spalding 1457" and "Personal Model." On back is a Spalding manufacturer's tag. Features include a "Form Pocket," a conventional back with a fleece lined wrist strap, and a twin-laced "E-Z Flex" palm hinge. A good portion of the use of the glove may have come after Berra gave the glove away.

The mitt comes with a PSA LOA (Cert. 1G01032) for the authenticity of the glove of the Berra game used mitt, while stating that "The condition of the glove prohibits us from determining the amount of game use to the Yankees iconic Hall of Fame catcher." What sports collection would not be substantially enhanced by the addition of a game used Yogi Berra catcher's mitt, from not only one of baseball's best-ever catchers, but one of the most beloved ballplayers of all-time.

Baseball Equipment

Lot # 1242: 1968 Dick Allen Philadelphia Phillies Game Worn Jersey (MEARS A10)

Dick Allen, scheduled to be inducted posthumously into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 27, 2025, was one of baseball's best hitters during the 1960s and '70s, when pitching dominated. Presented is a 1988 Dick Allen Philadelphia Phillies game worn jersey, with a MEARS Final Grade: A10. Allen played 15 Major League seasons: Philadelphia Phillies (1965-69 & 1975-76), St. Louis Cardinals (1970), Los Angeles Dodgers (1971), Chicago White Sox (1972-74), Oakland Athletics (1977). He was the '64 NL Rookie of the Year with Philadelphia, and the 1972 AL MVP with the Chicago White Sox. The 7-time All-Star played mostly as a first baseman or third baseman. His lifetime MLB batting average was .292 with 351 home runs and a career OPS of .912. One of his nicknames was "Crash" or "Crash Helmet." He wound up with this nickname when, as a home team player for the Phillies, fans would throw fruit or ice at him when he was playing first base. Then, the fans started to increase the danger by throwing flashlight batteries at Allen. To protect himself, Allen started to wear his batting helmet in the field, a form of "crash helmet." Allen's best season was in 1972 with the Chicago White Sox when he won the AL MVP, leading the AL in home runs (37), RBIs (113), OBP (.420), Slugging (.602), and OPS (1.023).

The offered Dick Allen Philadelphia Phillies game worn, flannel home jersey is a white, with red pinstripes. There is a sewn-on white tag in the collar with "Rich Allen" in black, chain stitched script. (Allen preferred to be called Dick rather than Rich or Richie, but the Philadelphia team insisted on calling him Rich or Richie for years at the start of his career). Seven clear buttons are down the front. Across the chest is "Phillies" in red embroidered felt. The left outside tail has a Wilson manufacturer's tag showing size "40." Below that tag is a "Wilson 1968 SET 2" tag. On back is an embroidered felt red uniform number "15" measuring 9.75". The torso measurement is 32" and the chest measurement is 20". The jersey shows heavy use. The offering comes with a MEARS Letter of Opinion (Cert. 322271), with the jersey receiving a MEARS grade: A10. With Allen's Hall of Fame induction scheduled for this summer, increased attention will be focused on the often-misunderstood player who was controversial but well-liked and highly respected by his teammates. Allen's career seems to have been underappreciated by many pundits and fans, but his Hall of Fame induction will surely increase interest in his career and memorabilia.

Vintage Sports Photographs

Lot # 1638: 1919 World Champion Cincinnati Reds Original Team Photograph from Player Jake Daubert (Family Sourced)

Presented is an incredible photo of the 1919 World Champion Cincinnati Reds. Although Cincinnati won the 1919 World Series, 5-3 in games, the losing team was the infamous Chicago White Sox, who became known as "The Black Sox" after eight of their players were banned from baseball for life for consorting with gamblers where the ways and means of throwing the '19 World Series were discussed. The banned Black Sox included Shoeless Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Eddie Cicotte, Chuck Gandil, Swede Risberg, Lefty Williams, Oscar "Happy" Felsch, and Fred McMullin.

Cincinnati's key players, all included in the offered photo, included Hall of Fame outfielder Edd Roush (top row, fourth from left), first baseman Jake Daubert, third baseman Heinie Groh (top row, fourth from right), and outfielder Greasy Neale, also a pro football star and later a famed college football coach. Pat Moran, also in the photo, managed the Reds to a 96-44 regular season record in 1919. The photo was consigned from the family of Jake Daubert. Daubert is pictured in the photo wearing his first baseman's mitt, in the front row on the left. Daubert led the NL in batting in both 1913 and 1914, and he was the NL MVP in 1913. Jake Daubert tied with Groh for the club lead in runs scored, with 79. Tragically, Daubert died in October in 1924 when against doctors' orders, he returned from an illness to play for the Reds at the end of the '24 season, and he died soon after following an appendectomy operation and then complications from a blood disease of which Daubert and his doctors were not aware. A plaque at the bottom of the photo reads, "Cincinnati Reds 1919 World Series Champions Black Sox Scandal." The photo has "1919" and "Boellinger Cin. O. (the photographer)" handwritten by an unknown hand near the bottom. The photo has a tiny smudge at the top and two folds on the right side. The photo also exhibits some slight darkening. Especially taking into account that the photo is over a century old, its minor imperfections do not diminish to any significant extent the photo's appearance.

Baseball Awards

Lot # 1402: 1926 Spalding Figural Baseball Trophy - Batter

Rare Spalding trophy featuring a batting figure mounted upon a large baseball, which in turn is mounted upon a wooden base. This impressive display piece, which stands nearly two feet in height, is considered by most collectors as the premier baseball trophy of the era. Produced by Dieges & Clust and sold by Spalding Bros. in its annual catalogs, this trophy is one of five different baseball trophies offered by the company at the time. Each trophy featured a different position player, but only the pitcher, catcher, and batter trophies featured the design of a figure mounted upon on a baseball (the other two fielder figures are much smaller). The offered trophy has been painted gold and was awarded as first prize to the National Folding Box Company baseball team. The engraved lettering on the plaque affixed to the wood base reads "Ind Rec Fed/New Haven YMCA/1926/Baseball/1st PL AM Div/Nat. Folding Box Co." The figural batting figure on top of the ball is detached (common for these trophies; it can most likely be professionally repaired); otherwise the trophy displays wear commensurate with its age, including areas of paint loss to the batting figure and ball, and moderate abrasions along the perimeter areas of the wooden base. The ball portion of the trophy spins slightly on the base, but remains firmly attached. Height: 20 inches. Base Diameter: 7.75 inches.

Basketball Cards
