1906 Battling Nelson vs. Joe Gans in Goldfield, Nevada Original Boxing Photo Book by "Dana"

1906 Battling Nelson vs. Joe Gans in Goldfield, Nevada Original Boxing Photo Book by "Dana"

Amazing one-of-a-kind scrapbook is a historic intersection of distinguished photography, the great western frontier, and the sport of boxing. This incredible synergistic combination is a veritable treasure chest of photographs by the dean of boxing photographers Percy Dana, the Charles Conlon of boxing! Consisting of 51 pages, affixed with an astonishing 126 original photos. regarding the September 3, 1906 bout between Battling Nelson and Joe Gans. The highlights include the 8x10" ring action shots, but no less significant are the photos of the actual town of Goldfield, Nevada (the architecture and signage are simply outstanding). Other images of note include the stacked silver dollars comprising the prize purse, both Nelson and Gans training in the days preceding the fight, photos of the stadium itself being completed, and other in ring pre-fight specimens. All original, the black pages are fronted with a matching leather cover (15x11”) embossed in gold with, “Photos-Incident To The Gans-Nelson Fight At Goldfield-Sept. 3 1906.” Photos are mostly 7x4.5”; with a series of 8x10" examples and six panoramas to open the album (yes panoramas!). The cover has minor wear, but is intact and holds together perfectly. The insides are beautiful and overall EX-MT. Many of the photographs are each worth $1,000 or more (some far more). They are a timeline of a week in the desert and American sports history that will never be forgotten. These early Wild West venues with their raucous backgrounds and pinpoint detail are like a page from Buffalo Bill’s diary. The breakdown value is staggering (over $50,000), but that would be a shame. This book is the ultimate time machine. It takes you back to when men were men and boxers were supermen. This is originally from the archive of boxing editor extraordinaire Jack Fiske. This piece has not seen the light of day until this moment.
