1906 Cap Anson Signed Handwritten Letter

1906 Cap Anson Signed Handwritten Letter

Anson signatures are almost as rare as black players in the big leagues -- a condition Anson himself helped bring about with his resistance to lowering the color barrier -- when he wrote this incredibly well preserved letter dated September 4, 1906. With the exception of his racist tendencies (which hardly hurt him at the time), Anson was the ideal American sportsman, a brilliant hitter and manager for the 19th century Chicago White Stockings (later Cubs) who innovated the hit-and-run and rotating pitchers, and was such a taskmaster that violation of his rules would bring not just fines but fists, from Cap himself. Even after he was fired by the Stockings in 1898 after 19 years, he remained enormously popular in Chicago. Among his 20th Century activities was doing a one-man stage act and becoming a City Clerk. It was during his tenure as the latter that he wrote this letter on personalized stationery reading "City Clerks Office, Adrian C. Anson, City Clerk" and with the city's crest in the upper left corner. The letter is addressed to "Carroll E. Cherry & Adele," who may have been his children given that he ends the letter, "Give hugs and kisses to all, Your loving father, A.C. Anson." Content appears to be personal rather than city business, with Anson -- who was in severe financial trouble after his career ended -- referring to a piece of property that "was left to us," which he apparently sold, optimisitcally writing that "we could make more money in Chicago." Writing occupies the entire front and nearly all of the back of the one page letter, with 2 P.S.'s that are initialed "A.C.A." The writing and signature are NRMT. Letter has typical mailing folds, but otherwise EX-MT with sharp edges and corners. A unique and interesting glimpse into the personal life of one of Baseball's first superstars.
