1907 Boston Braves Opening Day Invitation and Pass
In 1907, Boston had two Major League teams. The Boston Red Sox were in the American league, and the Boston Doves were the National League representatives. No, the Doves were not peace advocates. Their name came from the new owners of the team, the Dovey Brothers. The club played at the South End Grounds III. Managed by Fred Tenney, who also played first base, the team had a 58-90-4 record and finished in 4th place. A season highlight occurred on May 8th when Big Jeff Pfeffer threw a no hitter in a 6-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Tenney was a key player for the Doves, as he played 15 years of his 17-year career with the Boston National league franchise. Later, the Doves became the Beaneaters, then the Rustlers, and finally, in 1912, the Boston Braves. In 1953, the Braves moved to Milwaukee, and then in 1966 became the Atlanta Braves. The stylish Opening Day invitation, measuring 8.1x10.5", is written in a formal tone. "The Boston National League Base Ball Club requests the honor of your presence at The Opening Game of the Season - Thursday April eleventh at three o'clock - Columbia Avenue Baseball Grounds - Boston." The charming invitation is ornate and beautiful. There is slight toning around the edges, and the corners show some wear. The pass ticket is EX-MT. The item is over a hundred years old and it radiates the quality of its vintage nostalgia.
