1910 Philadelphia Athletics World Championship Trophy Presented to Jack Barry (ex-Barry Halper Collection)

1910 Philadelphia Athletics World Championship Trophy Presented to Jack Barry (ex-Barry Halper Collection)

Displayed is the Philadelphia Athletics' 1910 World Series Championship trophy presented to starting shortstop and Hall of Famer, Jack Barry. A member of the famous Philadelphia Athletics "$100,000 Infield," when $100,000 was an unprecedented amount of money to pay an infield, the quartet consisted of the following: first base Stuffy Mcinnis; second base Hall of Famer Eddie Collins; shortstop Hall of Famer Jack Barry; third base Hall of Famer Frank "Home Run" Baker. Barry was signed for the Athletics out of College of the Holy Cross. He played for Connie Mack's Athletics from 1908-1915. The $100,000 Infield won pennants for Mack in 1910, 11, '13, and '14, and World's Championships in 1910, '11, and '13. Traded to the Boston Red Sox in the 1915 season when financial pressure forced Connie Mack to break up his dynasty, Barry helped to lead the Red Sox to the World's Championships in both 1915 and '16. In 1917, Barry became the playing manager of the Red Sox and led the squad to 90 victories and a second-place finish. After the season, Barry and four teammates enlisted in the U.S. Navy as World War I sailors, and Barry spent all of the 1918 season in the military. He played again when he was released from the Navy in time for the 1919 season, but he played ineffectively and retired. He was a defensive whiz who hit .243 lifetime. He became the head baseball coach at Holy Cross in 1921 and coached there for 40 years, winning the College World Series in 1952, and in his tenure, compiling the highest winning percentage of all college baseball coaches at .806. In addition to being in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Barry is in the American Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, and he was an inaugural inductee, along with Lou Gehrig, Christy Mathewson, and Joe Sewell, into the College Baseball Hall of Fame. The offered trophy was part of the Barry Halper Collection. Engraved on the trophy is "Presented by The Citizens of Philadelphia to, John J. Barry, Worlds Champions, The American Base Ball Club of Philadelphia, Season, 1910." The bottom has "J.E. Caldwell & Co Philadelphia" on bottom with "Silverplate." At the bottom, the trophy has a 5.5" diameter, and it has a 6" diameter at the top. The trophy is 8" tall, and it weighs 3 lbs. 11.75 ounces. Although in generally very good condition, the trophy does exhibit numerous places where the patina has worn off and places where there is some tarnishing. The offering makes a wonderful remembrance of Hall of Famer Jack Barry and the 1914 dynasty of Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics.
