1910s Wilbert Robinson Photograph by Brown Brothers (PSA Type I)
Presented is an original Type I photo from Brown Brothers Photography, in New York City. Known as 'Uncle Robbie," Wilbert Robinson was such a popular manager that during his tenure as the Brooklyn Dodgers skipper that Brooklyn's National League team - before this known by various names, such as Bridegrooms, Superbas, and Dodgers - became widely known as the Robins, in honor of Hall of Famer Robinson. Robinson's Brooklyn teams won pennants in 1916 and 1920, and Robinson managed the Brooklyn club from 1914-31. Before taking the Brooklyn reins, Robinson briefly managed the Baltimore Orioles, and as a catcher he played for the Philadelphia Athletics (of the Major League American Association), the Baltimore Orioles (of the National League), the St. Louis Cardinals of the National League, and the Baltimore Orioles of the American League. He was also a long-time coach for the New York Giants, managed by his friend and former teammate John McGraw. While Robinson was the Brooklyn manager, the team was in spring training in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Robinson was involved in a stunt in which he attempted to catch a baseball dropped from a flying airplane that was 525 feet in the air. Famous aviator Ruth Law dropped a grapefruit instead of a baseball, and as Robinson tried to catch what he thought was a baseball, the grapefruit splattered all over him, and he thought he was bleeding profusely. His players on the ground, who were in on the stunt, laughed as Robinson thought he was wounded, and the good-natured Robinson soon joined in the merriment. The 3.25x5.25" original photo shows Robinson, most likely during his time in the 1910s as the Brooklyn manager. The photo has a few small creases and some minor darkening but is in overall good condition. The back of the photo has the Brown Brothers stamp, as well as "Wilbert Robinson C 171" written in pencil by an unknown hand. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA certified as "Type I AUTHENTIC."
