1911 New York Yankees Original Glass Plate Negative with Team Owner Frank Farrell

<p>Original glass negative capturing six members of the New York Highlanders' catching contingent posing together during spring training in 1911. All the players are pictured in a half-crouch stance while standing in front of the bleachers. Each player's name (either full or partial) is etched below his respective image: "Swe," "Blair," "Walsh," "Will," "Rus," and "Farrell."&nbsp;<span style="font-size: 10pt;">Walter Blair was a catcher with the Highlanders from 1907 to 1911, and catcher Joe Walsh played with the club in 1910 and 1911. The "Swe" most likely represents Ed Sweeny, who was the Highlanders' starting catcher in 1910 and 1911, while "Will" is almost certainly Bob Williams, who was a catcher with the Highlanders from 1911 to 1913. We are unable to identify "Rus," but that is probably because he did not make the roster that year. The most important figure here, however, is the portly fellow at the end of the line by the name of "Farrell," who we believe is none other than team owner Frank Farrell. Back in those days, it was common for team owners to accompany the club down to spring training and Farrell obviously decided to get in a little exercise as well. We don't know if he actually put on the "tools of ignorance" during camp, but if he did, he would have made for a large target behind the plate. Farrell co-owned the Yankees with his partner William Devery from 1903 to 1915, when they sold the club to Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast L'Hommedieu. The negative (7x5") displays several small chips/flakes along the right border (not affecting any player images) and minor border wear, otherwise it is in Excellent condition.
