1912-1970 The Sporting News Collection (405 Issues)
<p>Large collection of <em>The Sporting News</em>, consisting of 405 separate issues, spanning the years 1912 to 1970. Also included is a complete December 12, 1914, issue of <em>Sporting Life</em>. With just one exception, all are complete issues. The near-complete run of 1912 papers is bound in a vintage album (20x24"), otherwise all are all loose, as issued. <em>The Sporting News</em>, which was issued weekly, was the most comprehensive baseball newspaper published in the United States for nearly the entire century (1900-1999). This collection provides a wealth of primary source material and would be invaluable to historians. The collection consists of the following years:</p><p><strong>1912</strong> (50 issues, bound, near-complete run from January 11th to December 26th, missing only January 4th and August 8th; the January 11th issue is missing the first three pages); <strong>1944</strong> (51 issues, complete run, January 6th to December 28th); <strong>1945 </strong>(50 issues, near-complete run, January 4th to December 27th, missing only November 1st); <strong>1946 </strong>(2 issues), <strong>1948</strong> (39 issues, near-continuous run from January 7th to September 29th, missing only June 23rd), <strong>1949 </strong>(41 issues, near-continuous run from January 5th to November 2nd, missing only March 9th and April 13th) <strong>1950</strong> (35 issues, continuous run from January 4th to October 4th, missing May 10th, July 12th, July 26th, August 16th, and August 30th); <strong>1951</strong> (29 issues, near-continuous run from January 3rd to July 25th, missing only April 25th), <strong>1953</strong> (5 issues), <strong>1954</strong> (33 issues, near-continuous run from March 10th to November 3rd, missing May 26th and August 18th); <strong>1956</strong> (30 issues, near-continuous run from February 29th to October 3rd, missing September 19th and September 26th), <strong>1957</strong> (20 issues, near-continuous run from January 9th to June 19th, missing March 13th, April 17th, April 24th, and May 15th), <strong>1961</strong> (4 issues), <strong>1964 </strong>(1 issue), <strong>1969</strong> (10 issues), and <strong>1970 </strong>(5 issues). </p><p>The 1912 bound issues are in Poor to Fair condition, with water staining, tape application on nearly ever page, toning, tears, and brittle pages. The album is in Fair condition. The remaining papers are in Fair to Good condition overall, with brittle pages, edge tears folds/waviness, and toning the most common flaws, but all are eminently readable. <em style="font-size: 10pt;">Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.</em></p>
