1912 First Ever Game At Redland Field Panoramic Postcard

1912 First Ever Game At Redland Field Panoramic Postcard

Cincinnati’s so-called “Palace of the Fans” ballpark was too small, so Reds owner Powel Crosley built a bigger “palace” in 1912, the first ever steel-and-concrete structured baseball stadium, known as Redland Field. This panoramic print (as picture postcard) captures the first ever game at the park (later renamed, in his own honor, Crosley Field in 1934), which was located at Findlay and Western Avenues, and was designed by the noted architect, Harry Hake. This photo was taken on April 11, 1912, and shows the game in progress with the Reds on the field and the fans on the roof, the walls, and the electric poles. The Reds beat the Cubs 10-6 to christen the new stadium, which proudly housed the Reds until 1970. This picture postcard measures a dramatic 21 ? x 5”, and includes within the photo, at its bottom, scripted print which reads, "Opening Game, Cincinnati National League Park, Cincinnati vs. Chicago''. Postcard is a remarkable NRMT on the front, while on verso is "Mailing Card" and "This card can be rolled instead of folded for mailing," as well as minor pencil writing and paste marks.
