1912 Jack Johnson vs Jim Flynn Boxing Silk

1912 Jack Johnson vs Jim Flynn Boxing Silk

Rare hand-colored painting on silk depicts the combatants in the July 4, 1912, Heavyweight Championship bout between Jack Johnson and Jim Flynn. Measuring roughly 16x18", the color central image depicts the two fighters along with the venue, listed below as "Las Vegas, New Mexico" along with the date. Top lists "Johnson-Flynn" in all caps, beneath which is "World's Championship Bout" in Old English lettering. Only a handful of these are known to exist, not surprising due to the fragile nature of the silk, but this remains an impressive specimen. Background is off-white with minor staining at the right and bottom edges, and the side edges are frayed but this can easily be trimmed or covered by framing. So dominant was the Galveston Giant that Fireman Flynn was barely able to land a blow on the towering champion, resorting to head-butting which eventually caused the stoppage of the fight in the 9th round.
