1912 New York Giants Colgan's Chips Premium

1912 New York Giants Colgan's Chips Premium

New York Giants team premium issued by Colgan's Chips in 1912. This is an exceedingly rare premium and one that many collectors are not even aware is a Colgan's premium because the text in the lower right corner reads "Compliments of the manufacturers of Adams' Pepsin Tutti-Frutti Gum." We have offered just two other examples of this print, both more than twelve years ago. Back then even we were not aware that this was a Colgan's premium. However, new information has come to light since that time explains that explains the seemingly incongruous text. The Autosales Gum & Chocolate Company purchased Colgan's Gum, along with several other confectionery companies, in 1911. One year later, Autosales decided to discontinue the Pepsin Gum brand. The only problem was that both Colgan's Chips Red Borders and Colgan's Chips Tin Tops featured advertising on the reverse stating that a premium "Photograph of the World's Pennant Winning Team" was available by sending in twenty-five tin tops. When it came time to issue the premium, the company simply chose to market one of its current brands, rather than one it was planning to discontinue, hence the "Compliments of the manufacturers of Adams-Pepsin Tutti-Frutti Gum" text. The print features twenty-nine members of the 1912 National League Champion New York Giants in a traditional team pose, including McGraw, Mathewson, Marquard, Merkel, and Meyers. This premium (15.5x8.25"; visible dimensions), printed on heavy paper, appears to have been dry mounted onto a cardboard backing. There are several heavy tears and creases in the upper right quadrant, as well as scattered discoloration and a chip along the left border. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 21.25x13.75" Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
