1912 Titanic Inquiry Photograph (PSA Type I)
Photo capturing Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon giving testimony at the British inquiry investigating the Titanic disaster. A scale model of the Titanic can be seen on the far side of the auditorium. Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon was a wealthy Scottish sportsman who, along with his wife and her secretary, was a first-class passenger aboard the Titanic during its maiden voyage. Unfortunately for Duff-Gordon, his reputation was tarnished forever when the circumstances of his survival became known. According to other reports, as well as his own testimony, he took refuge in Lifeboat #1 with his wife and her secretary, thereby ignoring the order of women and children first. He also paid the crewman to leave with the lifeboat more than half empty. Although he was officially cleared of any wrongdoing, he was vilified by the press and was never able to clear his name in the court of public opinion. Three Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, along with a handwritten caption that identifies Duff-Gordon as the gentleman standing in front of the panel delivering his testimony. The photo (7.75x5.75") displays a few light-to-moderate creases and is in Very Good condition overall. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
