1912 World Series Game Used Baseball from Game 8

1912 World Series Game Used Baseball from Game 8

The legend of Smokey Joe Wood lives again in this magnificent and outrageously rare ball from the 8th and last game of the 1912 World Series between Wood's Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants -- a thrilling series that capped one of the greatest seasons any pitcher has ever had. That year, at only 22, the flame-throwing Wood went 34-5 with 35 complete games and 10 shutouts. He added 2 more complete game wins in the Series, then came back in game eight (game two was a tie) in relief to beat Christy Mathewson in a wild affair the Sox won in the bottom of the 10th after the Giants messed up on a popup. Walter Johnson once said, "Can I throw harder than Joe Wood? Listen, my friend, there's no man alive can throw harder than Smokey Joe Wood." Sadly, Wood slipped on wet grass the next spring, breaking his thumb, and was never the same. He hung around for a few more years, then retired in 1916 at age 26, cutting short what would have been a sure-fire HOF career. The ball, a valuable antique in any case, is certified as an historic landmark by the clear and legible indeed is the original inscription written after the game in black fountain pen: "Ball pitched by Joe Wood to Red Murray in 8th game of 1912 World Series." Actually, Murray hit the ball for a double, another facet lending it value. The inscription, then, is the ball's epitaph, giving it a place of honor in the collectible ball pantheon. Ball is extensively toned by dark brown splotches and white spot but the seams' blue and red colors are strong and overall it has a bronzed look, which of course is perfectly suited to a such a ball of distinction. Originally from the Barry Halper Collection, with LOA.
