1913 Cleveland Baseball Club Sunday Leader Supplement w/Joe Jackson
Displayed is a 1913 fascinating colorized team photo of the Cleveland American League Baseball Team, a squad known as the Naps at that time, named for their hugely popular player, Napoleon Lajoie, still playing second base and a former player-manager of Cleveland. The photo appeared in the Supplement to The Sunday Leader, a Cleveland newspaper. The vintage photograph shows the team in front of the stands at League Park II, the club's home field, and the fans in the stands, most dressed in tie and jacket, are a riveting window into the fashions of the times. The Cleveland Naps had a record of 86-66-3 in '13, in third place. The attractive photo includes some especially noteworthy players: Joe Jackson, later a member of the 1919 Chicago "Black Sox," and one of the eight Chicago White Sox players banned for life as a result of the scandal, is already a major star and he is given "Center Stage" position, smack in the center of the photo, the 14th player from either side, with his glove at his feet. Jackson, a superb outfielder, hit .373 that season. Hall of Fame second baseman Nap Lajoie is pictured 4th from the left. Lajoie played 13 seasons with Cleveland, as well as playing for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Athletics in his 21-year career. He hit .338 lifetime, was a 3-time batting champion, won a Triple Crown and still managed to hit .335 in '13, when he was 38 years old. Also in the picture is shortstop Ray Chapman, in '13 only 22 years old. Tragically, Chapman would pass away on Aug. 20, 1920, after being accidentally beaned by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees at the Polo Grounds the day before. Chapman is the only Major League player to ever have died as the result of being hit by a pitch. The photo measures 8.5x21", matted and framed to 14x26". It looks to be lightly mounted to backing with glue. The photo exhibits some minor wear at edges and corners, and it has the standard fold in the center. The item comes with a first place, blue ribbon attached to the frame from the Wayne County Fair in Ohio. It's an eye-catching offering that will generate interest as part of a collection or as a stand-alone display.
