1913 Jack Coombs World Champion Philadelphia Athletics Pocket Watch
Displayed is a gorgeous 1913 Philadelphia Athletics World Championship pocket watch once belonging to pitcher Jack Coombs. What makes the watch even more incredible is the story behind how it was obtained, as our consignor bought it in a pawn shop for $100! In his career, Coombs had an excellent 158-110 record, with a 2.78 ERA. When the Philadelphia Athletics won the World Series in 1913 by defeating the New York Giants in five games, Coombs only appeared in two regular season games, starting both, and he had a 10.13 ERA, and he did not pitch in the World Series. His limited use was most likely caused by injury. He had previously had some great seasons for Connie Mack's Athletics. In 1910, Coombs went 31-9, with a 1.30 ERA and was 3-0 in the World Series as the Athletics defeated the Chicago Cubs in five games. In 1911, Coombs was 28-12, with a 3.53 ERA and 1-0 in the World Series as the Athletics once again were World Champions, defeating the New York Giants 4-2 in games. Coombs was a talented athlete who played the outfield 62 times over three seasons of his career. The 1913 Philadelphia Athletics were a part of Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics dynasty. They went 96-57 on the season and were stocked with great players: Hall of Famers on the '13 squad: Pitcher Charles "Chief" Bender, pitcher Herb Pennock, pitcher Eddie Plank, second baseman Eddie Collins, and third baseman Frank "Home Run" Baker. The back is stamped "World Champions 1913." After his playing career, Coombs coached for 20+ years at Duke University, won an astounding six championships and even had Duke's baseball stadium named after him (Jack Coombs Field). The inside of the watch is engraved "Jack Coombs." "E. Howard Watch Co., Boston" is engraved inside as well. The watch is 14K gold. The front glass has a crack. The watch has a diameter of 1.75" and a thickness of approx. 0.25". The watch comes with an accompanying watch chain, about 17" long, which matches the golden coloring of the watch. The watch was awarded to Coombs in 1913, right in the heart of the Philadelphia Athletics first dynasty, a span of years from 1910-14 in which they won four pennants ('10, '11, '13, '14) and three World Series ('10, '11, '13). Although it is at present not operable, the watch is visually stunning, in excellent condition, and it makes a terrific remembrance for one of the great teams from Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack's initial dynasty.
Note: The description published in the catalog states the watch does not work, but that is incorrect. It works and is fully operational.
