1913 John McGraw Burke & Atwell Photo (PSA Type I)

1913 John McGraw Burke & Atwell Photo (PSA Type I)

Displayed is a 1913 John McGraw Type I Burke & Atwell photo of the legendary New York Giants Hall of Fame manager. McGraw managed the Baltimore Orioles in both the National and the American Leagues but did the bulk of his managing with the New York Giants. McGraw was a fine third baseman with the Baltimore Orioles, and he had a career .344 batting average. McGraw also learned many aggressive baseball strategies and tactics from Ned Hanlon, his Orioles' manager. Known as "Little Napoleon" for his sometimes-dictatorial ways and his 5'8" stature, McGraw won 2,763 games, second only to the great Connie Mack in Major League history. When speaking of McGraw, the gracious Connie Mack stated, "There has been only one manager - and his name is McGraw." The Giants' skipper managed the New York Giants for just a shade under 30 years (1902-1932). During that span, McGraw led the Giants to 10 National League pennants and three World's Championships. The black & white photo measures approx. 5x7". The upper left corner of the photo has been clipped, and there is a small stain near the upper left. There are also some light scratches in the resin-coated paper and a small amount of what could be the residue from glue or rubber cement in the area of the lower left corner. Printed on the back of the photo is "Aug. 30, 1913/Latest picture of John McGraw, manager of the New York 'Giants'/Photo News Dep't. Burke & Atwell Chgo." Not only is this photo nearly 110 years old, but it portrays McGraw with an imperious countenance perfectly fitting his nickname of Little Napoleon. The photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA.
