1913 Teddy Roosevelt Handwritten & Signed Letter to John L. Sullivan (1) and Sullivan's Signed Letter in Reply (1)

UPDATE: The John L. Sullivan letter in this lot appears to be a letter-press copy that was kept by Sullivan.

There are times while writing about Sports and Americana Memorabilia that you come across a hybrid lot that is exceptional, and this is undoubtedly one of those. There are two letters, the first of which is type written and dated May 2, 1913, from then Colonel Theodore Roosevelt to bare knuckle boxer John L. Sullivan. His signature is written in black ink with a steel tip pen. The second is a hand written and signed response from John L. Sullivan to the former President. Both documents have been well preserved. Sullivan’s letter is on a linen type paper which has some minor wear on the top border and is written in pencil which has faded some with age. Both signatures are clear and legible and score a 9 out of 10. Also included in the lot is a vintage promotional poster measuring 5 ½" x 9 ½” and in EX condition for a book titled The Rolling World, which contained several chapters on John L. Sullivan.
