1916 Boston Red Sox "Royal Rooters" Ribbon Pin Featuring Bill Carrigan

1916 Boston Red Sox "Royal Rooters" Ribbon Pin Featuring Bill Carrigan

Rare and decorative ribbon pin worn by a member of Boston's fabled "Royal Rooters" in 1916. The design consists of a gilt-framed brooch, lettered "Boston," an attached red-white-and-blue ribbon lettered "Red Sox Rooters 1916," and, below that, a red-bordered pin (2.25 diameter) featuring a photo of Red Sox player/manager Bill Carrigan. All the components rest upon the backdrop of a red sock (9.5" long). This is one of only a few such "Boston Royal Rooters" pins we have seen, all of which date from the club's 1915 and 1916 World Championship seasons. The "Royal Rooters," formed and led by Boston bar owner "Nuf Ced" McGreevy, was the name adopted by Boston's diehard fan base. The highly organized contingent, which numbered in the hundreds at its height, would often travel with the club on important road games, and was present in force for all World Series contests during the era. Many different "Royal Rooters" pins are known, but this specially designed example is the most elaborate of the group. This is the first example of this particular 1916 "Rooters" pin we have ever offered and we cannot recall the last time we have seen another at auction. The brooch and the Carrigan pin are both in apparent Excellent condition. The red-white-and-blue ribbon displays a tiny tear in the center but is otherwise in apparent Excellent condition. The red sock has several small insect holes and is in apparent Very Good condition. Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 8.75 x 14.75".
