1916 Ferguson Bakery D381 Felt Pennants Premium - The Holy Grail
The "Holy Grail" of baseball premiums, easily the rarest and most desirable of all, this premium pillow cover was available in concert with the BF2 felt pennants. Issued by the Ferguson Bakery in 1916, few had enough coupons to qualify for this major prize. The company was based in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and this specimen was discovered just a few miles away from there. It literally came from a "little old lady" who had it in the family for a decade or so short of a century. Interestingly, the only other specimen was discovered in an antiques store, also in Massachusetts, in the 1980s. That one is still with those original collectors who had not let it out of their hands since. This is the first one we have seen publicly sold. Bedazzling design of a myriad of BF2 felt pennants circle the perimeter in an intensely colorful design of felt, early screen printing and photo lithography. And the players pictured are a team as good as any in the dead ball or any other era: Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, George Stallings, Johnny Evers, Dutch Leonard, Bill Carrigan, Tris Speaker, Rabbitt Maranville, Larry Gardner, Grover Cleveland Alexander and Ty Cobb. Measures 32x32", easily the finest specimen known to exist.
