1916 Steve O'Neill Cleveland Indians Advertising Display
<p>Available is a vintage advertisement from 1916 featuring Cleveland Indians catcher Steve O'Neill. The advertisement was to be hung in stores to promote the "Sporting Records" publication. O'Nelll was one of four brothers who played in the Major leagues. He played 17 seasons, mostly with the Indians (1911-23), and he had a lifetime batting average of .263. Later he was a Major League manager for four teams, and managed Cleveland from 1935-37. He was quite successful as a manager, with a lifetime record of 1,040-821, and he was the winning manager in the 1945 World Series when he skippered the Detroit Tigers. The advertisement measures 20.75" x 13.75". It includes a photo of O'Neill, and a box score of the first National League game ever played, a contest between Philadelphia and Boston on April 22, 1876, in Philadelphia. The ad also includes a brief story about the four O'Neill brothers playing in the Major Leagues. Sporting Records was a daily (except Sunday) publication that would provide extensive statistics for sports fans. The advertisement has three small circular holes on the top to facilitate the advertisement being displayed. It also has <span style="font-size: 10pt;">mailing creases, some toning, and some pencil and ink marks.
