1916 "Tris and His Big Bat" Large-Format Photo and News Banner

1916 "Tris and His Big Bat" Large-Format Photo and News Banner

Original large-format photo of Tris Speaker as a member of the Boston Red Sox, together with its corresponding paper news banner issued by the American Press Association. Speaker is pictured at the plate during batting practice. The banner reads "Tris and His Big Bat! - Tris Speaker has bid good-by to the Hub and has set his course westward. He goes to Cleveland for $50,000 and he will try to make the Naps Pennant contenders." Although no year is listed, Speaker was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Cleveland Naps on April 9, 1916, thereby conclusively dating the piece. The photo (17x14"), which is printed on heavy paper stock, displays numerous vertical creases from having once been rolled, as well as many tears along the border areas. In Fair condition overall. The news banner (17x7.25"), printed on thin paper, displays light vertical creases and edge tears. In Good condition overall.
