1918 Cincinnati Reds Large Team Photograph w/Christy Mathewson
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Displayed is a 1918 oversized team photo of the Cincinnati Reds, with manager Christy Mathewson. The fantastic photo measures 11x14", mounted and framed to 25x29". Mathewson is seated dead center in the front row. Mathewson played all but one Major League game with the New York Giants. The Hall of Fame right-hander was noted for his "fadeaway" pitch, now known as a screwball. He had a record of 373-188, having the second most wins of any pitcher in Major League history. Mathewson was a 2-time winner pf the pitching Triple Crown, and a 5-time NL ERA leader. Matty was a part of four New York Giants pennant winners, and he was the star of the 1905 World Series, when the Giants defeated Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics with Mathewson throwing three complete game shut outs. Mathewson went to the Reds partway through the 1916 season to become the Cincinnati manager, and he pitched in only one game for Cincinnati as he won his final game of his career. In 1918, Mathewson managed the Reds for most of the season, with player/manager Hall of Famer Heinie Groh finishing up the season for ten games. That season's Reds went 68-60-1, for third place in the National League. During the next season, Mathewson was engaged as a newspaper writer to cover the 1919 World Series between the Reds and the Chicago White Sox. Mathewson and writer Hugh Fullerton helped to uncover that the World Series was fixed by some members of the Chicago White Sox, and that squad became known as the Black Sox. Notable players on the 1918 Cincinnati Reds: Hall of Fame outfielder Edd Roush, who batted .333 in '19; first baseman Hal Chase, who had a reputation of associating with gamblers and batted .301 in '19; Groh hit .320 in '19; Outfielder Greasy Neale, who later became famous as a college and pro football coach, hit .270; pitcher Hod Eller went 16-12, with a 2.36 ERA. There are some minor abrasions on the surface of the photo. The photo has been museum quality framed and matted.</span></p>
