1920's A.E. Staley of Decator Staley's Photo of Dave Bancroft
Interesting historic piece presented "Compliments A.E. Staley Mfg. Co. Decator , Illl." as written on verso. In the early 20th Century, Staley Manufacturing started company teams for both baseball and football, and the football team eventually became the famed Chicago Bears. Football Hall of Famer George Halas played on both the Staley football and baseball teams, and, as a coach and owner, transitioned the Staleys into the Bears. The baseball team was led by Hall of Fame pitcher "Ironman" Joe McGinnity. Here are shown other company teams that probably played the Staleys. One is Mueller (another Decator, Ill. team) Bancroft is center,; he is playing for Na'Gro" Co. (abbreviated). Bancroftis a Hall of Fame shortstop noted for his outstanding defense and he played on two World Series winners and later managed the Boston Braves and in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
