1920 Babe Ruth at the Plate Photograph (PSA Type I)

1920 Babe Ruth at the Plate Photograph (PSA Type I)

Original Type I photo of Babe Ruth at the plate in a game against the St. Louis Browns on July 13, 1920, at the Polo Grounds. Ruth was in his first season in pinstripes in 1920 and as one can see from this photo, the fans were turning out in droves to see baseball’s new home run king. The Yankees hosted the Browns for a doubleheader on July 13th, and Ruth entered the game with 27 home runs, which was two shy of his record 29 home runs the previous season. Unfortunately, Ruth failed to provide a thrill for the fans that day, going 1-for-6 in the two games, as the Yankees split the doubleheader. In the moment captured here, Ruth appears to have just hit a ball high in the air. A runner is on first and Browns first baseman George Sisler is following the ball with his eyes, as is Ruth. Three Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, along with a handwritten caption in pencil that reads “Ruth at Polo Grounds July 13th 39,000 people.” The photo (9.5x7.5”) displays a few small edge tears, light creases, adhesive residue on the reverse, and a small ink mark in the upper right corner. In Very Good condition overall. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
