Ty Cobb didn't smile much on a baseball field, but he could be friendly enough off it. In this photo (7.25x9"), Cobb shakes hands with William McCarthy, who became the President of the Pacific Coast League in 1920. Cobb is wearing a Detroit Tiger home uniform that was the type worn in both 1918 and 1919. So either this photo was taken before McCarthy was named PCL President, or Cobb was wearing an out of date uniform. Interestingly enough, in 1920, MCCarthy, in a reaction to the infamous Black Sox scandal, banned gamblers from the PCL ballparks and he was attacked by one of the banned gamblers.
