1921-1965 Army vs. Navy and Army vs. Notre Dame Program Collection (21)

1921-1965 Army vs. Navy and Army vs. Notre Dame Program Collection (21)

Presented is a wonderful collection of (21) college football programs from various games of Army vs. Navy (1921-64) and Army vs. Notre Dame (1932-64). Most of the programs are either 8x11" or 9x12". The Army vs. Navy programs are from the following years: 1921, 22, 27, 31, 32, 36, 37, 41, 47, 52, 61, 64. Some of the highlights from the Army-Navy programs: 1921: The Army-Navy game was still being played at the Polo Grounds in New York City, not in Yankee Stadium or in Philadelphia. Advertisements in the over one hundred-year-old program include one for airplane use, written with passenger airplanes being described as essentially new inventions. Another advertisement that indicates the vintage era of the times is one for Vaudeville. 1941: In perusing this program, one can palpably sense that the United States was on the brink of war. Numerous articles and advertisements in the program refer to weapons of war, and preparedness of the country for battle. When this Army-Navy game was played, the attack on Pearl Harbor was only nine days off. 1964: This program celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the Army-Navy Game. The '64 game was played at the newly named John F. Kennedy Stadium, in Philadelphia. A half page in the program shows two photos (one in his Navy uniform) of Heisman Trophy winner quarterback Roger Staubach, and his biography, with the short biography describing Staubach's many honors. 1944: The game was played at Yankee Stadium and the Army victory over Navy in '44 helped to start Army's greatest era. On the Army team are Glenn Davis ("Mr. Outside"), at halfback and Felix "Doc" Blanchard ("Mr. Inside") at fullback, and the program mentions each of these stars and describes their prospects in glowing terms. Blanchard helped Army to National Championships in 44,45, and 46, and he won the '45 Heisman Trophy, the first junior to ever win it. Davis, who also was on the '44, '45, and '46 National Champions, won the Heisman in '46, and is also pictured and mentioned in this program. Some of the highlights from the Army-Notre Dame programs: 1947: This program includes a photo of the 1913 Notre Dame team, on which famed coach Knute Rockne was an end. Also mentioned in the program is Notre Dame's Johnny Lujack, who would go on to win the '47 Heisman Trophy. 1965: This program has a photo of the 1913 Army team (including Dwight Eisenhower, and fellow famous World War II general Omar Bradley. But, Eisenhower, a halfback, had seriously injured his knee in tackling the famous Jim Thorpe in a game against the Carlisle Indian School in 1912, and even though he is pictured with the 1913 Army team, he never played college football in 1913 or ever again. In addition to the programs, this offering also has an approx. 9x14" four-page menu from Kugler's Main Restaurant in Philadelphia, PA, site of the '37 Army-Navy game. The menu cover has photos of that year's Army and Navy football teams. The menu cover heading reads, in part, "Army & Navy Day 1937." There are a few small tears in some of the football programs, and a few programs have some loose pages. A few programs have tape over small tears or to reinforce the binding, and a couple of the programs have occasional relevant handwriting in them, such as a running score of the game. But considering the age of the programs, they are generally in very good to excellent condition. The presented program collection presents a wealth of material about the players and coaches of famous Army, Navy and Notre Dame teams, plus stories, photos and advertisements that provide a fascinating visit back in time to the football, and the American culture, in parts of five decades.
