1921 Cleveland Indians Cardboard Advertising Schedule
Flanked by ace pitchers Jim Bagby, Stan Coveleski and Ray Caldwell, the Cleveland Indians won their first World Series in 1920, defeating the Brooklyn Robins in one of the sport's last best-of-nine championships. The following season, the Cleveland News capitalized on the team's success with this very rare advertising display that features a 1921 team schedule in the center, surrounded by the head shots of the Tribe, including manager Tris Speaker. Other notables include: Barnard, Wamby, Smith, Coveleski, Burns, O'Neil, Uhle and Clark. Wording across the top includes: "WORLD'S CHAMPIONS," "THE INDIANS IN BASEBALL" and "CLEVELAND NEWS IN SPORTS." Along the bottom is a plea to "READ THE GREEN SPORT EXTRA (FIRST IN EVERYTHING)." The 18,5" x 22.5" framed poster is a bit tattered with the left-side portion trimmed and affecting some of the player photos. There is chipping along the edges and some staining but still is a wonderful display piece and the only one of its kind that we have seen.
