1921 D350-3 Standard Biscuit Co. Babe Ruth (SGC VG-EX 4)

1921 D350-3 Standard Biscuit Co. Babe Ruth (SGC VG-EX 4)

In 1921, the Standard Biscuit Company produced this magnificent pasteboard of the Babe, here presented in a very understated grade of SGC VG-EX 4. The card itself is an extraordinary rarity, with only 2 other examples graded by SGC (only 1 higher) and none by PSA. D350-3 examples (the rarest of the three Standard Biscuit advertising issues) are very similar to E121 American Caramel series of 80, but were issued by the Standard Biscuit Company of San Francisco and feature advertising for that company on the reverse. This is naturally one of Ruth's rarest cards, as there are very few Ruth cards dating from the early 1920's. It is interesting to note that Ruth is pictured on this card in a Boston uniform, though he is appropriately identified below as a member of the New York Americans. "Boston" (mostly covered by Ruth's throwing arm) can be clearly seen across Ruth's chest upon close examination. Apparently, the Standard Biscuit Company was going to print and did not have the time to pursue an updated image of Ruth with his new team. This extremely attractive card of the Babe displays a clear, sharp image, with only the slightest touches to the corners and a tiny, insignificant crease along the bottom border (only visible on the front). Centering is 50-50 on the front and 60/40 left-to-right on the reverse. We feel the card has been graded VG-EX 4 only because of the miniscule crease and a slight color smudge near Babe’s name on the front. The back is clean with nothing to detract except 2 very light, stray roller marks. The card is quite spectacular as the lucky winner will certainly acknowledge as soon as he/she takes possession of it. A very worthy addition to any world-class Babe Ruth collection!
