1922 Christy Mathewson PSA Type I Photo
Presented is a PSA Type I 1922 photo of Hall of Fame inaugural inductee Christy Mathewson, one of the best pitchers in baseball history. The 6.5x8.5" Pacific and Atlantic photo features Matty, a legend with the New York Giants, and New York City Mayor John Francis Hylan. The wire copy attached to the back of the photo reads, in part, "'Big SIX' MATTY SELLS CHRISTMAS SEALS TO MAYOR HYLAN. Christy Mathewson's endorsement of the Christmas Seal campaign was evidenced today when "Big Six" Matty, as he is known in the world of baseball, called on Mayor Hylan [New York City Mayor] and sold him some Christmas Seals. Matty is enthusiastic about this campaign now being carried on by the New York Tuberculosis Association, he himself having spent several years fighting the Great White Plague. The back of the photo also shows a date of "12/2/22." The great Mathewson had a lifetime record of 373-188, with a career ERA of 2.13. He won the pitchers' Triple Crown twice and led the National League in ERA 5-times. His pitching in the 1905 World Series was phenomenal. Mathewson started three games and won them all by shutouts as his New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Athletics. The photo exhibits some slight darkening, mainly along the white edges, because of the passage of time. Some of the paper from the wire copy overlaps the bottom of the photo. The Type I photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA. Overall, the photo is in very good condition, and its one-hundred-year-old age makes it a vintage collectible for the great Matty.
