1925-1926 Victor Official Baseball Score Book w/Lefty Grove's Major League Debut, Plus Ruth, Gehrig, and Cobb

Vintage Wright & Ditson Victor baseball scorebook featuring scored games for twelve Boston Red Sox games, six Boston Braves games, and four Boston-area amateur games between April 14, 1925, and May 14, 1926. Each game has been neatly scored in pencil, with all the lineups written by hand. The highlight is a scored game between the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Athletics held at Shibe Park on opening day, April 14, 1925. This game marked the Major League debut for Philadelphia pitcher Lefty Grove, who, ironically, would end his career and record his 300th win as a member of the Boston Red Sox in 1941. Grove's debut was far from auspicious as the Red Sox tallied six hits and five runs before sending Grove to the showers with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Luckily for Grove, the A's battled back from the 5-0 deficit and prevailed in their home opener with 9-8 ten-inning victory. Every inning of Grove's historic debut is dutifully recorded here as the first entry in the book. The book records each of the four games from the 1925 opening series between Boston and Philadelphia. Interestingly, those are the only road games listed for either Boston team. All the other Red Sox and Braves games recorded are home contests for each club. Many Hall of Famers are listed in the lineups for the visiting clubs, including Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, and Combs with the Yankees, Speaker with the Indians, Cobb, Gehringer, and Manush with the Tigers, Hartnett with the Cubs, Cuyler, Carey, Traynor, and P. Waner with the Pirates, Frisch, Youngs, Kelly, Southworth, and Jackson with the Giants, Harris, Goslin, Rice, with the Senators, and Roush with the Reds. All but six of the games recorded in the book date from 1925. The remainder are from 1926. The identity of the original owner is not known, but the front and back pages display several handwritten notations regarding players, matchups, injuries, etc., indicating that this book may have belonged to a local Boston-area sportswriter. Regardless of its origin, it is an outstanding primary source of games played during the mid 1920s, including Grove's Major League debut. The hardcover book (7.5x5.25") displays heavy wear to the covers, including a torn label on the front, and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall.
