1925 Pittsburgh Pirates World Series Automobile Radiator Cap Ornament w/Box

1925 Pittsburgh Pirates World Series Automobile Radiator Cap Ornament w/Box

Presented is a 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates World Series automobile radiator cap ornament, with box, that celebrates the Pirates' seven-game World Series victory over the Washington Senators. Under Hall of Fame manager Bill McKechnie, Pittsburgh had a 95-58 regular season record to capture the '25 National League pennant. The team included three other Hall of Famers: third baseman Pie Traynor, who that season batted .320, with 106 RBIs; outfielder Max Carey, who batted .343 in '25, with 46 steals; outfielder Kiki Cuyler, who hit .357, with 18 home runs and 102 RBIs. These radiator cap ornaments were popular in the 1920s. They would attach to the radiator cap and then spin around when driving. The metal radiator cap lower attachment measures approx. 2.25" at its widest (at the base) by 4.5" in height. A thin metal rod, about 11" in height, attaches to the lower attachment. This rod has a tin, two-sided "baseball" ornament that reads, "World Series 1925," and on top a separate tin "pennant," approx. 1.25x3.25", that reads, "PIRATES." The "baseball" and "pennant" ornaments would spin around when the car was driven. This is the nicest we have seen. It has never been used and the tin litho decorative element of is close to NRMT. It comes with the original box, which we have not seen before. The box is tattered a bit and no longer intact, but the front, back and pieces of the sides are still here, and part of the offering. The box reads, in part, "World Series Souvenir," and the manufacturer is listed as "The Auto-Ball Novelty Company." The original price of 98 cents is written in pencil on the box. This is a fine piece of Roaring Twenties baseball memorabilia.
