1926-1928 Yankees Infield w/Lou Gehrig Photograph (PSA Type I)

1926-1928 Yankees Infield w/Lou Gehrig Photograph (PSA Type I)

Displayed is the starting infield of the 1926-28 New York Yankees in this circa 1926 Type I Original News Service Photo taken by Acme Newspapers. In '26, the Yankees won the pennant and lost the World Series 4-3 in games to the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1927, the Yankees had what many commentators feel is the most powerful team in baseball history. Under manager Miller Huggins, they went 110-44-1 in the regular season and swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. Hall of Famer Gehrig had his first great season in 1927, as he bashed 47 home runs and drove in an amazing 173. Lazzeri, also a future Hall of Famer, had 18 homers and 102 RBI in '27. The pictured infield stayed together for a third year in 1928 as the Yankees again swept the World Series, this time over the St. Louis Cardinals. The presented photo measures 6.5x8.4". A clipping from an unnamed newspaper is affixed to the back of the photo. The clipping reads, "In the spring these young men are fancy. On every training field in the land the young hopefuls of the baseball world are performing valiant feats these days but will they continue to shine so brilliantly? The Yankees' infield is off to a great start at St. Petersburg. Here it is, left to right, Columbia Lou Gehrig, first base; Mark Koenig, shortstop; Tony Lazzeri, second base; and Joe Dugan, third." On the back is written, in pencil, "(BB Teams - N.Y. Amer. League Yankees)." The Type I photo pictures one of baseball's most famous infield quartets, who comprised the inner four on the iconic '27 Yankees. The photo exhibits some fading from the passage of time, a crease on the upper left and a stray line on the right margin. Overall, the photo is in very good condition. The Type I photo has been encapsulated and PSA certified Type I AUTHENTIC.
