1926-27 Purdue Basketball Schedule/Cigarette Pack Holder

Presented is an attractive Purdue Basketball cigarette pack holder from the 1926-27 season. On one side of the 1.5x2.25x0.75" holder is printed "Boost Purdue", and also the entire Big Ten schedule of the Boilermakers' 12 games. The other side of the holder shows a charming advertising image of a taxi, representing "People's Taxi", vintage 1920s, and the narrow back of the holder shows two phone numbers for the taxi. In those still early telephone days, each phone number consists of merely four digits. It was a time when the University of Chicago was in the Big Ten and when Ohio State University was just referred to as "Ohio" on the season schedule. 1926-27 was an off-season for Purdue, as the team was 3-13 overall. They were coached by Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach Ward "Piggy" Lambert, the famous coach known for popularizing the fast break as a regular basketball tactic. Lambert didn't lose much. His Boilermaker teams won or shared 11 Big Ten titles in his tenure as coach, and in a few years, he would coach and mentor John Wooden, a 3-time All-American who would go on to coach UCLA to 10 National Championships in a span of 12 years. The light metal cigarette pack holder exhibits wonderful "Roaring Twenties" nostalgia, and it is in very good condition.
