1927 Detroit Cougars NHL Stock Certificate Signed by Chas. Hughes
In 1927, the Detroit Cougars issued a public offering of shares in order to finance the construction of their newly constructed arena, the Olympia. The new arena would showcase professional hockey in Detroit for the next fifty years. Cougars founder and President Chas. Hughes has signed in fountain pen at the bottom of this historic stock certificate issued by the Detroit Hockey Club. Signed and dated July 23, 1927, this attractive document featuring an image of a hockey player was made out for 100 shares of the team. A copy of the letter sent by Hughes to the purchaser mentioning other investors including Henry Ford is included. As the founder of the team that was to become the Detroit Red Wings, it is unbelievable that Chas. Hughes has not been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He is truly deserving of a spot along side his peers. Still, a rare signature from one of the game's pioneers.
