1927 Gene Tunney vs. Jack Dempsey Long Count Fight Program
Great program from the September 27, 1927 Tunney-Dempsey "Long Count" fight at Chicago's Soldiers Field, which produced the most controversial moment in the sport's history. It occurred when Tunney, who'd beaten the "Manassas Mauler" in their first fight, was knocked cold in round 7 but Dempsey didn't go right away to a neutral corner and referee Dave Barry delayed the count. By the time Barry finally got around to counting 9, Tunney got up and eventually took a 10-round decision. Ring fans still argue about it to this day, and the program makes it seem as though it all happened yesterday with stirring photos of the 2 fighters on the tinted-color cover and loads of articles and photos inside touting the "Battle of the Ages." 8 1/2 x 11 1/2", G-VG with some mild foxing and staining mainly around the edges, inside pages are sharp and lightly toned.
