1927 Jack Dempsey vs. Gene Tunney Souvenir Trifold Program
Rare trifold program issued for the second heavyweight title bout between champion Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey. The the text on the front cover reads "Souvenir World's Heavy Weight Championship Bout/Gene Tunney vs. Jack Dempsey/Soldier's Field, Chicago/September 22, 1927." The program opens to reveal individual full-page portrait photos of each boxer, with the center panel featuring short biographies for both men. This is much rarer than the official program for the fight, and just the second we have ever offered. We are not sure of its exact distribution at the time, but it was probably offered either at Solder's Field, or close to the fight venue. This was the famous "Long Count" bout in which Dempsey knocked Tunney down in the seventh round, but he refused to immediately go to a neutral corner as instructed by the referee. That delay gave Tunney extra time to recover, which he did, and then ultimately won the fight by unanimous decision. The program (6x10") remains in Very Good condition overall.
