1927 Lou Gehrig by Charles M. Conlon from "Baseball Magazine" - "The Sultan of Swat's Probable Successor"
An outstanding image of Lou Gehrig, this is fresh from the "Baseball Magazine" Photo Archive and is reaching the market for the first time since. Sumptuous pose of Gehrig batting in pinstripes dates from 1927 and illustrates an article in the August, 1927, issue of Baseball Magazine subtitled, "The Sultan of Swat And His Probable Successor." Perfect image of amazing clarity and contrast with rich textures and noir lighting make it one of the best Conlon Gehrig's out there. It has a few tiny pinholes and a crease on the bottom left border, otherwise in EX-MT (8.5x6.5"). Also has Conlon signature as well as editor's notes on verso. For collectors living on an island, Charles Martin Conlon was THE consummate baseball photographer of the period and perhaps the Zeus of all on the sports photographer's Mount Olympus. Baseball Magazine was THE baseball publication of the 20th century, bar none. Lou Gehrig was...well he was Lou Gehrig. From the 1996 Christie's Auction of the "Baseball Magazine" photographs arranged by the late Don Flanagan, with their hologram on back. Lot comes with copy of the August 1927 "Baseball Magazine."
