1927 New York Yankees World Series Ring
The King of All Rings, befitting the King of All Teams. This immensely rare bauble is one of the most highly sought after memorabilia pieces of all-time -- a 1927 New York Yankees World Championship ring. Before you faint, some details. The ring -- one of the first to be presented to ballplayers for winning it all -- begat an historical trend that has made such rings the most prized status symbol an athlete can ever receive. So imagine the thrill of getting this thing in 1927, when only Ruth and Gehrig made enough money to be able to treat it as just one of the spoils of being who they were. For the rest, even stars on the "greatest team ever" like Tony Lazzeri, Mark Koenig, Joe Dugan, Herb Pennock, and Waite Hoyt must've felt like a Rockefeller sliding it on their finger. (A nice metaphor for the team after wrapping the poor Pittsburgh Pirates around their fingers in the World Series in 4 straight.) And though each of these rings cost a whole lot less than the $46,000 or so for today's championship rings, we bet they meant a lot more back then, more than Rockefeller's money could buy. The story behind this ring is fascinating, according to family tradition it was a gift given to a Chicago sportswriter by legendary Yankees clubhouse manager Pete Sheehy. The ring is completely 14K gold save for the circular diamond in the center peering out like a Cyclops at the hub of an octagonal design with an oblong border and outer corona. Both shanks have an identical engraved design of the American League crest with eagle wings sprouting with the words "New York" and laurel leaves snaking around the edges. No red, white and blue "Yankees" or high hat logos here. The ring is not engraved on the inside band, and it has been sized (currently 9.25). This ring is the essence of an innocent era when being given such a gem was all the embellishment one needed. Condition is 7/10, a tremendous quality in a ring this old. Not a speck of tarnish or discoloration, top or underside, and the diamond shines like it's got its own little battery. Simple, but it said it all -- we are the champions. Now, you can faint.
