1927 Tunney vs. Dempsey Ushers Armband
Right this way to an usual find. Ushers' armband from the 1927 Gene Tunney-Jack Dempsey "long count" fight at Soldier Field makes an interesting sidebar to one of boxing's bizarre events. Silkscreened strip of 19 by 3 1/2-inch faded-green gauze has crease marks but has preserved remarkably well with minor fraying on the borders. The words say it all: "Usher Captain. Zone 12. I.N.G. Tunney-Dempsey Boxing Exhibition. Soldier Field, Chicago, Sept. 22, 1927." Dempsey floored Tunney with a left hook in the seventh round but did not retreat to a neutral corner, allowing Tunney at least six extra seconds to recover. He got up at the count of 9 and defeated Dempsey in a decision to retain the heavyweight title. Our guess is that the usher probably had to escort a few surprised folks back to their seats.
