1928 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Barnstorming Tour Original Film Negative

Original film negative capturing Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig posing together during their famous “Bustin Babes and Larrupin’ Lou’s in 1928. Last year Lelands offered an original photo made from this negative, and we just discovered two more, one of which is offered in this sale. When we first offered the photo last year, we noted that we had never seen this image before We also speculated that the reason for that might have been because it was taken by a local photographer, and not by one of the major syndicate photographers. Our theory may be correct, since the negative is accompanied by its original envelope bearing the handwritten notation “made by Harry B. Collins Jr. in 1928.” We have been unable to discover any information on Harry B. Collins Jr., which lends support for our original supposition. 1928 marked the second of the two celebrated cross-country “Bustin Babes and Larrupin’ Lou’s” postseason barnstorming tours, and it was just as successful as the first. Everywhere they went, Ruth and Gehrig were treated like kings, with capacity crowds the norm at every venue. The negative (7x5”) displays small areas of paper and/or adhesive residue at each corner, a tiny scratch, and a few minor surface blemishes. In Very Good condition overall. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive.
